North Carolina Governor Bashes Schools That Stand Up For Transgendered Students

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory continues to defend the state’s sweeping anti-LGBT law despite public outrage and political backlash, going as far as to mock Bruce Springsteen after the musician canceled a concert in protest,

When a school system in Charlotte on Monday announced its new bathroom policy that flies in the face of the controversial law by allowing students to identify as whatever gender they choose, the governor’s office couldn’t help but fire back.

A spokesman for McCrory, in a statement on Tuesday, accused Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools of defying transparency and “purposely breaking state law.”

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, a district that includes more than 146,000 K-12 students in 168 schools, on Monday adopted an updated policy that it says follows a federal court ruling and will better protect transgendered students, The Charlotte Observer reports. In addition to allowing students to select the gender and name by which they want to identify, the policy requires that schools honor that identity in restrooms, locker rooms, yearbooks and graduation ceremonies.

“This is about courage, understanding and compassion,” Superintendent Ann Clark told the newspaper. “These are our children. These are the community’s children.”

Passed in March, North Carolina’s controversial House Bill 2 removes legal anti-discrimination protection for LGBTQ people and mandates that individuals use the public bathrooms that corresponds to the sex they were assigned at birth. It faces a legal challenge from the U.S. Department of Justice.

George Battle III, an attorney for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, said during a news conference that the updated policy is not meant to defy House Bill 2, according to The Charlotte Observer. Instead, it follows an April ruling by the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals which Battle said requires “transgendered students must be given access to the restroom, locker room, changing room facilities of the gender for which they self-identify.”

“That’s the law of the land for five states that are in the 4th Circuit, North Carolina being one of those states,” Battle said. “This isn’t CMS making a stand against HB2.”

Predictably, McCrory saw things differently.

“Instead of providing reasonable accommodations for some students facing unique circumstances,” the school district “made a radical change to their shower, locker room and restroom policy for all students,” Graham Wilson, the governor’s press secretary, said.

“This curiously-timed announcement that changes the basic expectations of privacy for students comes just after school let out and defies transparency, especially for parents,” Wilson said in a statement. “The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System should have waited for the courts to make a decision instead of purposely breaking state law.”

The school district’s new policy is slated to take effect when classes resume in August.

You have to accept them for what they are,” Kelly Hagemann, a school district parent, told WSOC-TV. “We’re maybe not going to understand everything about it, but we can’t really alienate people.”

Late last month, University of North Carolina System President Margaret Spellings wrote she had “no intent” to enforce the anti-trans bathroom law.

How To Avoid Making The Great American Social Mistake

This post was originally published on Techealthiest.

“What do you do for a living?”

Ahhh, the go-to question for most American men in a new social situations, usually with male strangers.

Living equals working when make strangers talk for the first time.

American “man code” deems it acceptable to learn of a stranger’s occupation before anything else. (I can’t speak for women in this scenario, but feel free to comment below if it resonates with you as well.)

Of course, you have the option of hiding behind your phone and checking his or her Linkedin profile to see if his job is even worth talking about. This strategy works well if you fear the conversational unknown.

In a professional setting it makes sense to talk about work, but why can’t we put work away when we have the chance to talk about other things?

I can think of five “good” reasons why we would begin an ambiguous social situation by asking “What do you do?”:

1) In the Age of the Short Attention Span, it makes sense to get immediate feedback on whether this person is worth your time investment. Also, with all of our messaging, video conferencing, emailing, Tweeting, and Facebooking, we’re gradually forgetting how to relate to people in the flesh.

2) You ask about his so you can talk about yours. Talking about your occupation would be intensely satisfying if you’re proud of a recent work victory or a change in your professional identity.

3) You have no idea what to talk about other than what you do for a living. You have few hobbies or interests. Life is work for you.

4) You’ve been conditioned to ask this question. The thought of discussing your private life with a relative stranger is anxiety-provoking.

5) You suffer from social anxiety, which limits your mental freedom to talk about risky and personal topics.

A conversation with an unfamiliar person can be steered in many directions, yet it’s as though there’s some strange, magnetic, American pull toward the topic of work as quickly as possible.

Yes, it’s absolutely normal to feel nervous and uncomfortable when you’re expected to create conversation with someone new for more than a few moments. Discussing work makes total sense since we all expect it, but does that make it a good choice?

Americans pay a heavy price for requiring passage through unnecessary and meaningless social niceties in order to get to the good stuff.

Unless you’re passionate about your job and you’ve established some semblance of a “work-life balance” (an unattainable, silly ideal for most of us), it’s not so healthy to avoid sharing more about yourself with someone new.

This habit is usually a sign that you haven’t properly invested in finding and carrying out your passions.

If you’re passionate about non-work activities, you’ll want to talk about them. If you lack passions in your life, then work is a safe topic.

Take a moment to consider how much you tend to discuss work in ambiguous social situations. If you are a what-do-you-do-for-work kind of person, then it’s a sign you need to invest more time in things that make you happy.

Many of us struggle with social anxiety. We enter a room filled with unfamiliar people and our thoughts begin to race. We wonder how we’re being judged by others. We have very specific fears about the worst judgments someone can make.

Social anxiety seems to be an even larger issue among younger generations who’ve been raised on screens and who prefer texting over face-to-face communication.

Here’s a quick conversational tip for people who grapple with social anxiety:

Enter an ambiguous social situation prepared with in-depth knowledge of one or two topics you feel comfortable talking about. Reading the New York Times, Time Magazine or some other news source that explores issues on a deeper level. This way you can always steer the conversation toward one of your comfortable topics if you’re super nervous. Ideally, you will choose topics you’re passionate about.

It’s much easier to talk about our passions. Challenge yourself to avoid discussing your job. This will help you to value your passions more. Try to get at what your conversation partner is passionate about. Avoid asking about his or her job.

If the person you just met keeps talking about his or her job, allow him or her to talk about work for a bit and then try to steer the conversation toward what you’re both passionate about in life. Let him or her speak as much as you do.

I promise you you’ll get more out of the conversation.

Why do I consider this social behavior to be an American issue?

Americans seem to work more than people from most other countries. It’s how we spend most of our time, so we define ourselves by what we do for a living.

In order to maintain our consumer-driven culture, we have to work long hours to afford stuffing our lives with material goods.

On the silver anniversary of ADVICE, allow me to say thank you to everyone for reading and to those who have shared their personal lives in this public forum.

After all, this column wouldn’t exist without your questions, so please keep them coming.

To submit a question, fill out this impossibly brief Google form, then come back and read today’s answer…

(Questions have been modified for space and clarity.)

I went on a date with a guy and had a really good time. At the end of the night, he told me he was married. He said he felt bad and wanted to be honest with me. Yes, I was very upset, as I seem to attract married men. We still talk to each other on the phone and we do see each other two to three times a week at our sons’ baseball practices. I have told him several times that we cannot continue talking to each other, and he tells me his relationship with his wife is OK. He continues to contact me and tells me he wants me, but I don’t know if he really likes me. I know he can’t just break it off with his wife overnight — nor would he — but can he really feel something for me?
Jlag0307; Orlando, FL

In one of the first editions of this column, I explained how, in my answers, I wouldn’t be telling people what they should or shouldn’t be doing. Doing so would imply that I know best, and that’s not the case. I’m neither judge nor jury.

Instead, my goal is to paint a 360-degree picture of a situation, to present all viable options and resolutions — and then let the questioner decide on the proper course of action.

Unfortunately, with this question, I’m having trouble adhering to my mission statement.

This situation is bad all the way around. He’s married. Your sons play baseball together. I’m not sure there are two sides to this story.

I don’t mean to sound harsh or insensitive, but I don’t see how this is a relationship you can pursue. I get that it’s difficult to be lonely, and I get that when you find someone you like, you’re willing to do just about anything — and put up with just about anything — to hold onto that connection.

But do you really want to have an affair with the father of your son’s teammate? Before you wade too far into this, think about the potential consequences. Think about if this is what you want for your love story. Think about your son and the humiliation he stands to suffer if things go south. (And in all likelihood, it will go south.) Think about this guy’s wife and what it’d feel like to have someone cheat on you. Do you really want to be the other woman?

Not that it makes a difference, but this guy isn’t even saying he’s looking to leave his wife for you. In fact, he’s telling you the exact opposite. He’s telling you that his marriage is fine and that he’s not going anywhere.

Best-case scenario, he’s someone who should never have gotten married and is searching for his next side piece. Worst-case scenario, he’s a scumbag who takes advantage of unsuspecting women to get off, preying on their vulnerabilities in the bleachers during batting practice. Where’s the upside? Where’s the fairy-tale ending? Where’s the ending that results in anything but disaster?

Could he be feeling something for you? Sure. I guess. But I think the more appropriate question is: What does it matter?

Instead of focusing on him, let’s focus on you. You said you always attract married men — the very definition of the unavailable dream. Why do you think that is? Granted, given your son’s age and extracurricular activities, these are the guys you most frequently come across, so it could be a product of circumstance.

But if I had to bet, I’d say there’s more to it than that. I don’t believe you’re consciously pursuing other people’s husbands, but I do believe they keep showing up on your doorstep for a reason.

While I accept that there’s much in life we can’t control, I do think that the worlds we create for ourselves aren’t created by accident. They are often a reflection of our inner thoughts and beliefs. To a certain extent, our lives play out as a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So I’m wondering what’s making you invest in this toxic relationship. What purpose or void is it filling? Do you not believe you’re worthy of something better? Do you not believe you’re worthy of happiness? Deep down, is there something that’s convinced you that this is the best that you deserve?

I don’t know, and I’m not going to guess. In realigning with my mission statement for this column, I’ll let you be the one to decide.

Lots Of Parents Are Naming Babies After Clinton, Trump… And ‘Hamilton”

It seems that this year’s presidential election is influencing parents in ways beyond political activism and baby fashion choices. Presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are apparently providing baby name inspiration as well.

BabyCenter analyzed the roughly 115,000 baby names registered on the site and found that the name Hillary increased 142 percent in popularity since this time last year. The names Bill, Chelsea and Charlotte rose 113 percent, 18 percent and 17 percent respectively.

According to a press release from BabyCenter, the name Donald also rose in popularity but only by eight percent. Melania is up 36 percent, and Ivanka increased by four percent.

Bernie Sanders does not appear to have had the same effect, as the name Bernard fell 50 percent, and no new baby Bernies appeared in the BabyCenter database.

“A presidential election is a big deal, and new parents who choose names like Hillary and Donald are placing a bet that their new baby will share the name of the next American president,” Linda Murray, BabyCenter Global Editor in Chief, stated in the press release.

“In a sense, they’re already voting for their favorite candidate. Time will tell whether they picked a winner or the next John Kerry or Mitt Romney,” she added.

BabyCenter’s analysis also found some potential baby name influence in the hit Broadway musical, “Hamilton.” Since last June, the name Hamilton has increased almost 60 percent in popularity. Meanwhile Jefferson is up 171 percent, James rose 25 percent, George increased by 21 percent and Maria is up almost 22 percent.

“The combination of ‘Hamilton’s’ success and the election year has parents feeling patriotic,” Murray explained, adding, “When parents reach into history to select a leader’s name for their child, it’s usually because they feel inspired by that person’s values and legacy. The Broadway show’s multi-ethnic, cross-culture story speaks to millennial parents. Hamilton is the new Lincoln or Madison.”

For more information about these findings, visit BabyCenter.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

‘For What It’s Worth’: Bernie, Hillary, Jerry Brown, and A Colorful California Primary

“There’s something happening here
What it is ain’t exactly clear …”

Stephen Stills
“For What It’s Worth”
Buffalo Springfield
January 1967

Bernie Sanders had quite a Memorial Day. First, he addressed a spirited rally of more than 20,000 people in downtown Oakland, then he and actor Danny Glover drove a short distance and attended the second half of the Golden State Warriors’ dramatic Game 7 victory in the NBA Western Conference Finals. As Sanders and much of the local media pointed out, his arrival coincided with the defending world champion Warriors coming from behind and taking command of the game, completing their dramatic comeback from a 3 games to 1 deficit in the series.

Naturally, Sanders saw a parallel with the California team’s comeback to win the conference title and his own trailing campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination

“The Warriors were down 3-1 in the series and they turned it around and I think that’s what we’re going to do, too,” Sanders exulted. “A very good omen for our campaign.”

Since getting ripped for seeming to rationalize his supporters’ unacceptable behavior in shouting down the very liberal Senator Barbara Boxer — a very fine person and Hillary backer now who served with me as co-chair of the SolarCal legislative task force back during Jerry Brown 1.0 — at the recent Nevada Democratic Convention, Sanders has mostly cooled the anti-Hillary Clinton rhetoric coming from his campaign. Sanders himself has seemed to take up the challenge of competing to be the best candidate in running against Donald Trump. And his campaign has seemed to really take off here in California, with big rallies all over the state.

Is the force really with Sanders now, such that he can come from behind to win the California primary, then somehow parlay that into overturning Hillary’s 3 million-vote advantage in the popular vote and near lock on the number of delegates needed to win the nomination?

Well, maybe the first. But you wouldn’t want to bet on the second.

California public polls are all over the place. One very respected poll has a statistical tie, while a couple of other public polls have double-digit Clinton leads. My read is that both are off, that Hillary is ahead, but Bernie is in striking distance.

The Clintons evidently see things the same way, as Hillary is scrapping her previous schedule in favor of campaigning on five straight days here, starting Thursday.

Sanders has been drawing big crowds everywhere, and I mean everywhere, including places no other presidential primary candidate has ever gone, around California. It’s ultimate import is not yet clear, but there is clearly, as old Hart for President campaign friend Stephen Stills sang so long ago, “something happening here.”

If supporter enthusiasm equated to electoral victory, Sanders would have the Democratic presidential nomination in the bag. That it often does not does nothing to negate the fact that Sanders has struck a very powerful chord with his message criticizing the historic levels of income inequality and rigging of the political system by big money and media.

Governor Jerry Brown cited that in a statement on the race, praising Sanders and noting that he emphasized similar themes in his 1992 presidential campaign, in which he finished as the Democratic runner-up to Bill Clinton in a bruising battle. Sanders, of course, differs from Brown in running as a democratic socialist.

But Brown went on to endorse Hillary Clinton this time after meeting for 90 minutes earlier this month with former rival Bill Clinton at the Old Governor’s Mansion in Sacramento, which Brown and First Lady/Special Counsel Anne Gust Brown have refurbished as a truly historic residence.

Brown pointed up Hillary’s big overall lead in the Democratic contest and near lock on the delegates needed to win. He praised her skills, experience, and tenacity, citing a world in crisis and the not at all unrelated threat of Donald Trump.

“This is no time for Democrats to keep fighting each other,” he declared. “The general election has already begun.”

As longtime readers know, I’m essentially always for Jerry Brown. His take is always very interesting and usually on target. And, not surprisingly, I don’t disagree with his analysis.

But as a mere columnist, I have a slightly different conclusion. As I’ve said before, I intend to vote for Bernie Sanders.

He may not have struck me as a president when we met a few years ago, but he was clearly a powerful advocate. And his advocacy in this campaign merits not only my great respect, but my primary vote.

While I may differ with this and that particular in his democratic socialist agenda, he and his movement represent a powerful political tendency which can serve as a force for greater justice and less corruption.

As for Hillary Clinton, longtime readers know that I not infrequently disagree with her on the issues. While I’m hardly a pacifist or really any sort of dove, I’m generally a much more highly selective hawk than the former secretary of state. And the Wall Street coziness really is too much.

The presence of a powerful Sanders vector in American politics can serve to help move her away from some problematic stances.

And if Hillary continues on the course probably set when she won three of the four February contest states, I will be happy to support Hillary for the general election.

She is highly intelligent, capable, hard-working and deeply engaged by substance, a pragmatic progressive and battle-tested veteran of decades of attacks from the right-wing and its compliant de facto media partners.

The stakes, with a chaotic world and the potential advent of the neo-fascist bully boy Trump, as aggressive a know-nothing ever to come close to the presidency in my lifetime, are simply too high.

In the meantime, godspeed to Bernie Sanders.

ADVICE 22: The Two-Pronged Approach to Handling Stress

(Questions have been modified for space and clarity.)

I am a 25-year-old female, and I’m noticing I’m getting more frequent headaches and stomachaches than usual. I’m not happy in my job. What connection do you think stress and illness have? What do you recommend?
– Too Young to Ache; New Orleans, LA

From the Merriam-Webster dictionary

STRESS: A physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in disease causation.

There it is. There is a direct connection between stress and illness. It says so in the dictionary.

Which makes sense. Just think about what happens when you’re stressed. Not only do you shift emotionally — your demeanor, mood and mindset darken — you shift physically as well. Your shoulders tense, and your chest tightens, and the butterflies swirl. Too Young to Ache of New Orleans gets headaches and stomachaches. Classic stress staples.

I’m no doctor, but I can’t imagine that your body cares what’s causing these physical maladies. It’s still suffering. And if it suffers enough, it will eventually weaken and break down, just as it would if you repeatedly overindulged a bottle of tequila or a carton of Haagen-Dazs. The net negative is a tax on your system, which leads to illness and disease, just as the definition states.

And few things can impart a larger amount of stress on body and mind than work — especially when you’re dissatisfied with it. There are 120 hours in a five-day workweek. Subtract 40 for sleep (if you don’t have kids), and that leaves 80 waking hours. If you work (by definition) full time, that’s at least half your life you’re doing something that’s stressing your infrastructure. And that doesn’t account for commutes, unpaid lunch breaks and Sundays spent dreading the week ahead.

Based on your question’s wording, it’s unclear why you’re unhappy in your job. Do you hate it and want to do something else? Are you frustrated with your role and want something more? Or do you have everything you want but are battling to keep up?

I don’t know. And I don’t know if it matters. Because, details aside, everything boils down to two “M” verbs:

MANAGE

Stress is unavoidable. It’s found in virtually every situation, no matter how perfect a situation seems. I’ve been stressed while vacationing at a beautiful oceanfront resort, because I dreaded my vacation coming to an end.

The key is figuring out how to manage stress, and that starts with the ability to diagnose it. As discussed above, physical ailments are a dead giveaway that there’s something deeper going on.

Yes, sometimes a headache is just a headache. But when these ailments come out of nowhere and/or recur, it’s worth it to assess the wide-angle perspective. Is there something on the outside that’s weakening your insides? Is there a correlation between what you do each day and how you feel each night?

Should an imbalance be identified, it’s time to lean on your coping skills. What are some healthy coping skills? Everyone has their favorites, but you know the usual ones — exercise, journaling, meditation, The Bachelor, quality sleep, all of the above. How do you develop these coping skills? Like you would anything — through commitment, discipline and repetition.

If possible, it helps to develop these skills before your world begins to crack. The military trains in peace time so they’re ready when they’re called to war. The same applies here. Create good habits now, and they’ll be there when you need them.

Of course, if the stress persists, it’s time to change.

MODIFY

Change is hard for a bunch of reasons, but the hardest part of making it is believing that you can. You evaluate where you are, and you look at where you want to go, and it’s like the two are in different universes. “How can I possibly get there from here?”

This makes it easy to feel (preemptively) defeated, which makes it that much easier to stay in place. But when you’re overwhelmed and stuck, it’s imperative that you find a way to assess the distance to be covered not in its totality, but as a series of individual steps.

I know…there’s not a more beaten-to-death cliche than “One step at a time.” So instead I’ll steal a different one from Al Pacino’s pregame speech in Any Given Sunday: inch by inch.

“The inches we need are everywhere around us,” says Coach D’Amato. “On this team, we fight for that inch … because we know when we add up all those inches, that’s gonna make the f$ *%@!$ difference between winnin’ and losin’! Between livin’ and dyin’!”

You are unhappy in your job. And depending on what’s causing that stress, there are varying actions you can take to change that. Inch by inch.

If you want to find something new, update your resume and research available opportunities. If you want a promotion, talk to your boss about taking on additional responsibilities. If you’re unsure of what you want but know you’re still miserable, shift your perspective by focusing on one work-related thing each day to be thankful for. (Actually, that last one is good to do regardless.)

Management and modification — only you can determine what you need and what feels right. But no matter what course you choose, don’t worry about the end result, and don’t try to close the gap all at once. Just start.

Daddy…

2016-05-31-1464728325-2965205-FJHerringFLc1934.JPG

The author’s father as a young man, Florida.

It has been 44 years since we last spoke. On that day — December 7th, 1972 — you were 57, and I was 21. Writing now, in Florida, the state where you came of age, as a lifeguard on the wild beaches, in the 1920s, I am 64.

Your only child, I am now seven years older than you were the day you died. (I marvel at children who, through one mishap or another, never even meet their fathers, lost as men are in war or removed by less calamitous engines of separation.)

But I very much had a father, and was fathered.

And, Daddy, I knew you. You allowed me to know you, in all weathers.

I knew you as a beloved child and a young woman stumbling into adulthood, and I knew you in your young manhood and in the prime of your life. (I regret, so, that I could not know you in old age, a country for which you left me no firsthand map nor compass.)

At this remove, you are much more complex a figure than you were the day after your sudden death by stroke in Columbia, South Carolina. Grief — and it lasts, as a tympanic echo — at first simplified you; time has complicated and deepened you.

I suppose, as I approached and then overtook your own 57 years on our planet, how you appear has depended more and more on where I stand.

You began as a grand monument on the landscape. You appear now still heroic, but a hero among many heroes.

I remember, clearly, reaching my own 57th birthday, and thinking that, as you died at 57, and Mother died at 72, I was entering a time when I had better “get my affairs in order.” Not because I might also expire early, but because I had seen, in both my parents’ lives, the blossoming that can follow middle age.

The years between 50 and 70 were, I felt, the time of coming to grips. Not coming to grips with anything, per se, but of attending, of having one’s wits fully about one, of coming into one’s own.

I was brought up by adults, and I wanted, fully, to become an adult in my own room.

You were fully formed, fully conscious at 35, 40. All the years I knew you, you were “whole,” an integer. You knew what work you wanted to do in the world, and were doing it. You loved, and were loved. You taught, and were constantly teaching. And healing some of the wounded. I’ve always said you were a hard act to follow, but yours was no act.

When I was small, you and I wandered, again and again, the length of Ventura Beach on the California coast. We spent most week-ends we could there, at the beach house of a psychiatric social worker who was your colleague in LA: Mary Perry’s “Runaway Cottage,” on that then-empty stretch of beach, was our place of meetings and rich retreat.

Ventura was, in the 1950s, unsullied, a vast, long congeries of tide pools as described and pictured in my favorite childhood book, Pagoo, Holly Clancy Hollings’ account of the life cycle of the marine hermit crab (and, by extension, the lives of all the creatures among whom, and upon whom, Pagoo lives out his days).

Back then, you introduced me to all the inhabitants of Ventura’s tide pools. The sea anemones, tethered to rocks and often buried in sand, were stationary residents, while the hermit crabs, growing and outgrowing shells which they are compelled to abandon for larger and larger temporary shelters over the course of their lives, were free to wander.

Worried about the sea anemones stuck on their rocks, I felt compelled to “feed them” bits of muscle, and you never stopped me… until the day I realized I was actually killing the muscles to feed the anemones, and the anemones would do very well without my help — as they had done since c. the Cambrian period of the Paleozoic Era (from 541 to 485.4 million years ago).

Now, Googling “sea anemones,” Daddy, I can take what I experienced, beneath your watchful, loving eye, even further, and in an instant. At six, I realized that the anemone could live without me. At 64, I have just learned that the anemone was here long, long, long before me, and will probably be here long, long, long after me… the anemone and the hermit crab, Climate Change permitting, but not me or mine.

As Father’s Day rolls around, I thought I’d write this letter to you, place it in a virtual bottle in the great virtual sea, and thank you for being my guide, my protector, and my… Daddy, for there is no word as sweet in English as that little form of address.

Thank you for those walks on the beach in our huge shared classroom, and those introductions to my fellow students, they of the tentacles and gills.

Thank you for living on, for the brief duration, in all the people whose lives you touched. You would have been 100 this year, so those you and I both knew are now few. Still, we few remember, tethered to our rocks or outgrowing (yet) our shells. We remember you.

I was 49 when I met my husband so, of course, you never knew him, Daddy. And it was only after I’d met him — a jazz trumpet player — that I learned you’d played the cornet in your teens; the trumpet in Florida’s Volusia Symphony Orchestra, in your early 20s.

You and Dean and I would have enjoyed one another, and so I like to picture us — all of us at all ages — walking the beach at Ventura as it was in my childhood. In memory — my memory — I unite us all, even those of us who never met, in that moment out of time when love makes everything possible.

The Blessing

The Blessing

Another delightful and entertaining story with characters who walk off the pages into the reader’s heart…truly a winner,” said Rendezvous about Jude Deveraux’s An Angel for Emily. “All sorts of clever turns and surprises. Definitely a keeper…wow!” raved the Philadelphia Inquirer. Now the beloved New York Times bestselling author concocts a charming, piquant tale about a take-charge businessman and a daffy but wise young widow, the special bonds of brotherhood, and the eternal love between mother and child, all set in a small Kentucky town during Christmas, the season of… The Blessing When wealthy, hard-driving corporate genius Jason Wilding reluctantly takes a break from his business and his husband-hunting girlfriends for a Christmas visit to his hometown in Abernathy, Kentucky, he has no idea what his physician brother, David, has in store for him. It seems that Amy Thompkins, a whimsical young widow with definite artistic talent, has captured David’s heart, but courting her with a demanding baby in tow has been difficult. In order to pursue her, he persuades Jason to move into her home and take care of her spoiled but adorable son, Max, for a week. For a fiercely efficient CEO, it’s an impossible scene: a falling-down old house; buckets on the dining room floor to catch the rain; a widow living on next to nothing, with no marketable skills. But Amy’s joy for life, her love for her son, and her sparkling humor are irresistible — and tiny Max adores Jason beyond reason. Soon, Jason sees Amy and her future as a prime target for his strategic planning. Importing his private chef to prepare the little one’s food and buying a baby store so that his mother can get real bargains are just the beginning. Because enigmatic Jason is thawing — the tender feelings and longing he has buried for years are begging to be heard. And when he smiles, Amy is reminded of a Mount Rushmore monument finally cracking up — in the best possible way. The mutual attraction is glowing bright, but what to do about David? Once again, Jude Deveraux’s deft hand and loving vision conjure up a novel full of surprises and delights, in a story that will warm all our hearts and make us believe in the power of miracles, large and small. It’s a tale for all seasons, and a love story to remember always.

Zone Food Blocks: The Quick and Easy, Mix-and-Match Counter for Staying in the Zone

Zone Food Blocks: The Quick and Easy, Mix-and-Match Counter for Staying in the Zone

Here’s the follow-up to The Zone and Mastering the Zone. Author Barry Sears, Ph.D., has formulated a way for readers to follow his diet plan (30 percent fat, 40 percent each carbohydrates and protein) by breaking down foods into measurable units, la Weight Watchers. It’s designed to make eating on the run–even if you’re stopping at McDonald’s–a Zone-friendly experience. But it’s not exactly a piece of cake. Anyone who hated word problems in math class may be slightly baffled by the necessary calculations for foods not listed in the charts. For example, if you want to convert a serving of cereal into Zone blocks, you need to look at the label and subtract the grams of fiber from the total grams of carbohydrate; this gives the total of insulin-promoting carbohydrate. Divide this result by 10. (Although to be accurate, it should be divided by 9, as Sears has assigned 9 grams to each carbohydrate block; he says you may as well round up to 10, since that makes the math easier.) And there you get your Zone block. As long as your total blocks stay within the 40-30-30 ratio, you’re in the Zone. Even more confusing are the measurements for some of the “pre-calculated” foods in the charts. For example, 80 fluid ounces of Rice Dream Rice milk equals 39 carbohydrate blocks and 8 fat blocks. While it’s unlikely anyone would guzzle down 10 servings at once, it is likely they’d have a hard time finding this product in the listings in the first place, as it’s listed

When Two Loves Collide: The Inspiring Story of Dr. John and Dot Mooney

When Two Loves Collide: The Inspiring Story of Dr. John and Dot Mooney

Army Captain John Mooney, Jr., M.D., returns from World War II a heroic surgeon, highly decorated for his bravery and the wounds he received saving soldiers in fierce combat all across Europe. In addition to his battle scars, he returns with another war-induced malady. The drugs and alcohol he took to handle his own pain have unknowingly turned him into an alcoholic and drug addict. He marries a beautiful Georgia country girl, a young nurse who loves to drink and party. At first, success, fame, money and excitement fill their lives. But then their passionate love for each other begins to collide with their passionate love for their addictions to alcohol and drugs. Sheer chaos follows. One desperate night in a cheap, dirty motel, they almost die from convulsions trying to detox each other from their uncontrollable compulsions. An ambulance gets them to a hospital in time. The physician begins signing himself in and out of mental institutions while his wife becomes addicted to electric shock therapy from the highs she gets from the injections of Sodium Pentothal. On the verge of losing his surgical skills, his lucrative medical practice and their three young sons, John Mooney is sent to Federal prison on drug felony charges for writing illegal prescriptions for narcotics. There behind bars he finds the miracle of recovery and redemption . . . the solution for himself, his wife and the thousands of others like themselves they would go on to save.
