President Obama to Governors: “I Look Forward to Making Progress Together”

President Obama answers a question following his remarks to the National Governors Association

President Barack Obama answers a question following his remarks to the National Governors Association in the State Dining Room of the White House, Feb. 23, 2015.

Earlier today at the White House, President Obama spoke to America's governors and reaffirmed his commitment to working with them to make more progress across our country.

As he reiterated in his remarks, America's resurgence is real. But even though our nation "is as well-positioned as we've been in a very long time," as the President noted, he also emphasized that we now have to focus on what kind of choices we need to make together going forward to ensure that our momentum is sustained:

Kentucky Senate Committee Passes School Restroom Mandate For Transgender Students

A Kentucky Senate committee on Monday approved a bill that would require transgender students to use restrooms designated for “their biological sex,” days after an identical measure failed.

The legislation, introduced last month, would require schools to “provide separate, private areas designated for use by students based on their biological sex” rather than their gender identity.

The legislation last week failed to earn seven votes needed to pass the Senate education committee, but legislators voted again on Monday and approved the measure 8-1, sending it to the full Senate. When a Kentucky Senate bill fails a committee vote, the committee chair can order a reconsideration, Amber Duke, communications director of the ACLU of Kentucky, told The Huffington Post. Bad weather was blamed for two senators missing last week’s vote, Duke said.

In a statement Monday evening, a coalition of Kentucky pro-LGBT groups noted that three senators, including two who voted against the bill last week, were missing from Monday’s vote.

“Unfortunately, tonight, the Kentucky Senate chose to prioritize an issue of discrimination after it was defeated just days ago with bi-partisan opposition,” Chris Hartman, the director of the Kentucky LGBT advocacy group Fairness Campaign, said in the statement. “Given the number and scale of important issues before the Senate this session, it is shocking the committee felt the need to re-vote on this. It is willful, mean-spirited, and does nothing to move our commonwealth forward.”

Don’t Make Me Hide You

dontmakemehideyou

by guest blogger Renee James, humorist and blogger

Neologism of the day: Domamehy, pronounced “doh’-may-me-hi.” No, this isn’t a new menu item at Nobu, nor is it the new hot class at Equinox. It’s a shortcut to the prevailing thought I seem to have these days whenever I spend time reading my Facebook newsfeed. It’s a mash-up of “Don’t make me hide you.”

For the record, Facebook still offers plenty of connections, communication, and entertainment I find fun and rewarding. So there’s that. But my tolerance for all things annoying isn’t what it used to be. I can feel myself getting closer to becoming that cranky woman who shakes her fist and shouts, “Get off my lawn!” at the neighborhood kids.

The good news is I can quietly, easily, and with very little regret kick people off my cyber lawn–and I have. Regularly. Life is too short–even fake life on Facebook–to interact with individuals who make you insane with their inanity.

You know how it starts. One little update, one singular thought, one surprising point of view from a friend that gives you pause. A tiny pause, I grant you, but it’s there. The post refers to a public figure, an event, or a conviction your friend feels compelled to address, usually accompanied by some outrage. On its own, it simply represents an interesting facet of someone you know. You skim it; accept it with a silent “Huh! Never knew that…” and then shuffle it to the “inconsequential” file in your mind.

Moving on, however, you find you can’t move on. Next day–or maybe even later that same day–there it is again. Different verse; same song. It could be a politically motivated message or a cry for an end to social injustice or a plea for activism toward resolution. Look, I have nothing against passion and expressing beliefs. I have nothing against open minds or sharing reasoned thinking about almost anything. It’s just that posts like this tend to be accompanied by a strident “How can everyone be so ignorant?” attitude. And on a daily basis, that gets old. Very old.

This is what confounds me. How can so many people who demand tolerance in all things be so intolerant of everyone? I don’t mean we should overlook truly evil people or undeniable malevolence. I’m talking about people who dismiss and denigrate anyone with any opinion that doesn’t quite sync up with their own particular point of view. I wonder about that and why I’ve never noticed it before. I wonder how I got to be so…well…ignorant.

Examples: Until I spent time reading my newsfeed discussing the movement to legalize pot, I never recognized that stoners are the most energetic, organized, and motivated people around–at least when it comes to legalizing pot. Or that some politicians focus on nothing but saving the planet for future generations, while others want nothing more than to create a toxic, dying wasteland for all. (For the record, I am not registered with either major party.) And until I joined Facebook, I had no idea that atheists are smarter than everyone else. Live and learn.

But there it is. That’s the problem. I’m NOT learning. I’m just enduring fury, with no payoff or substance. It must be satisfying to see the world in such sharp black and white. Maybe you have to, in order to share your point of view with such certainty. Because for the endlessly outraged, every post, from just about every side, is about blame, guilt, shame, and–surprisingly–superiority. (Their own, not yours.)

Unfortunately, far too often the conviction and horror people feel compelled to share is based on nothing, or almost nothing. I resist posting a link to LMGTFY.com (“let me google that for you”) on a daily basis. People who “protest-post” adhere to their own version of that old saying about truth and stories: “Never let a google search or a quick check on Snopes get in the way of a good rant.”

I choose to hide people who post such “headlines” and add something like, “I can’t even read this story. It makes me sick…” Me (thinking): “Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. Let me understand this. You’re going with the headline. You’re buying it–outright and completely. You’re not going to read the story. You’re not going to check a few sources and see if it even holds up? You’re just going to be angry and dismissive and judgmental.”

Fine. Your choice. Let me just say this: There is an enormous difference between being dismissive of the world and being discerning about the company you keep, even online company. So…domamehy. Wait. Done. Ahhhhh.

Compassion Is In the Details

If you were to ever secretly record me watching television, you’d see a lot of this:

2015-02-22-Thefaceof.png

I am a crier. Just a few days ago, I found myself crying at that State Farm commercial where the guy keeps saying he’s never going to do something (get married, have kids, drive a minivan…), then it cuts to a shot of him on the couch with his sleeping wife and two kids saying, “I’m never letting go.” Those four words crawled right out of the television, down my throat and wrestled themselves into nice fat lump for me to get all choked up on. That’s right, people. I cried at a STATE FARM COMMERCIAL. You can add that to the very long list of culprits which have made me weepy, including standing ovations, wedding toasts, the song “Gracie” by Ben Folds, cute old men doing just about anything and the graduation episode of Saved By the Bell. (Damn you, Mr. Belding! I always knew you loved Zack best.)

While I often poke fun at my over-emotional side, someone once told me it was simply a sign that I was a compassionate person… that I was easily moved by the plight of my fellow man and woman. I took the compliment and secretly patted myself on the back. Hell yeah, I’m compassionate! Score another point in getting to the end game of Heaven. Before long, Kelly Suellentrop and Mother Teresa will be practically synonymous. To prove it, witness me ugly cry while watching an episode of Parenthood. I’m feeling all the deep feels for the Bravermans.

But if I really look at my life, how often am I truly compassionate when it matters? And I’m not just talking about the big stuff. Let’s face it: it doesn’t always take a lot of effort to be compassionate on a grand scale, because we usually aren’t doing it alone. When natural disasters hit, when telethons are begging to help sick children or when tragedy is put on the world stage, we know the right move to make because we are people who are mostly good. We can shake our heads in sympathy with others, send our dollars to give some aid and spread the word through organized movements. Those are all worthy things, and we should continue to do them. But in those situations, we can give surprisingly little of ourselves and still make an impact on a larger sense of global humanity. Compassion from afar is still compassion, but it is also a little like crying at the movie Sophie’s Choice. We can easily be moved by something that does not actually require much sacrifice on our part, and then we get to move on.

The real question is how often do I show compassion at all those tiny little moments that make up a lifetime, not just for myself, but for the people with whom I interact? The times that involve me putting aside the ways I might be inconvenienced, annoyed or hurt. The times that challenge my beliefs. The times that are not simply jumping on a bandwagon, but doing something that might only be noticed by the person on the receiving end… if even that. The times that actually require some type of sacrifice from me. Yeah, I’m not always so good at that.

Compassion is usually not on the table when my daughter has to suffer some terrible consequence for forgetting a school assignment because geez, it’s not my day to remember all your crap. I am not exactly compassionate when my son hurts himself doing something I repeatedly told him not to do, because I told you so. Compassion is scarce when I make sure someone knows I feel put out after reluctantly agreeing to help because seriously, it is eating up my only free time this week to watch all my DVRed shows. I am not always compassionate towards the elderly driver going at a snail’s pace in front of me because for the love of God, man, McDonald’s stops serving breakfast in five minutes and my day really needs to be fueled by a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit with a large Diet Coke. Compassion was not what I expressed for Kanye West in my post about parenting advice from the Grammys, because some people need to know when to just sit the ‘eff down and let a man accept his award. And I am certainly not compassionate when my aging dog defecates on the carpet for the umpteenth time in a month, even though I know deep down she probably wouldn’t do it if she could help it. (I say probably because there’s always the small chance she really does take sick delight in watching my gag reflexes fire on overload, as I scoop up her poop with a plastic bag over my hand, then try not to use that specific hand for eating the rest of the day because I swear there is still the faint ghost smell of feces on it.)

Those things don’t seem like life-changing moments. Does showing compassion towards people during such inconsequential incidents matter that much? Can’t I just make up for it when I do my part to end world hunger or raise money for a school? Won’t that translate enough compassion to others and, most importantly, to my children?

Here’s the thing: Compassion is in the details.

I truly believe the world is sustained by the tiniest acts of compassion, just as a beach is composed of the smallest grains of sand.

2015-02-22-Theworldissustainedbythetiniest.png

Not only do those grains come together to create something greater than themselves, but they are transient, able to be carried elsewhere in plastic pails or between toes, to bring the beach to places it otherwise wouldn’t be. Yet if the beach was simply made of one giant piece of sand, it would surely be impressive… but it could only exist in that one place. No one could bring a piece of the beach with them.

In the same way, grand scale compassion doesn’t always trickle down to promote the more mundane tiny acts of compassion. Because it requires less self-sacrifice, we are left with a false sense that we have already done our part. It’s like taking the “easy A” course. On the other hand, showing compassion in the details that tend to demand more of us not only makes a difference to those around us, but it goes on to breed compassion in the big picture. If I can suck it up and get over the inconvenience and raging assault to my delicate senses that comes with cleaning up some poo without yelling at my dog that she’s a good-for-nothing nuisance, then donating a Thanksgiving meal to a homeless shelter is a piece of cake. If you’ve ever smelled dog poo, you know that first incident requires way more compassion.

I want my children to see me doing more of these small acts of compassion. The hard acts of compassion. I want them to watch me building my own beach. Then I will give them their own grains of sand to take along wherever life leads, and hope they build castles and shorelines of their own, one seemingly inconsequential moment of compassion at a time. And I will probably cry when they do…

…mostly because it will remind me of when Barbara Hershey dies in the movie Beaches. I mean, I am pretty compassionate after all.

I Go Red for Mis Abuelas

By Chef Hamlet Garcia

Five years ago I became a national volunteer spokesperson for the American Heart Association‘s Go Red for Women campaign. To this day, many people ask me why I support this cause and not others. The answer is that I carry this cause in my heart.

I was raised under the guidance and care of two great women. They both had simple, strong personalities with a tempered focus in their actions. They were heads of families, paternal and maternal, and for me they became much more than that: They were teachers, friends and even confidantes.

My “Nona” (grandmother) Alcira, the mother of my mother, certainly was my first teacher. From her I learned everything from my ABCs to the rules of three. She taught me that the key to success in life is to study: “Learn a craft or profession,” she would always say. She was so bright and a hard worker par excellence; she always offered a few words of wisdom to keep me and my brother motivated to stay in school and achieve our professional dreams. As those encouraging words were her most frequent to me, that’s the road I ultimately decided to travel.

My Nona suffered from a heart condition known as Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, which is a heart-rhythm disorder that, over the years, produced several episodes of angina. Fortunately for her, she never suffered from a full-on heart attack, but over time her condition became complicated, and she was ultimately diagnosed with hypertension.

Nona always asked me for tips and healthful recipes, even though she really didn’t like cooking at all. Her cravings were rather common: white bread, Venezuelan arepas, pizza or sweets. In recent years, I convinced her to try eating whole-wheat bran cereal. I believe this small dietary change really helped her improve her overall health, and I remember her telling me once, “You have that special something to influence people. You should be on TV helping others.”

On my father’s side I had my “Abuela” (grandmother) Brizeida, a true matriarch in her ways and very serious with everyone, saving her soft side and affections for me. I grew up with her while my mother finished her postgraduate in internal medicine. My family always said I was her favorite grandson, and perhaps rightly so, because through her I developed my true passions, learning to work with my hands, my first recipes and cooking a sign of love for my beloved ones.

Abuela and I shared many evening chats, games and family trips. She suffered from hypertension and diabetes and had a stroke four years before her death. She constantly fought against the salt and sugar, because she knew the risk factors, so she always asked about healthful cooking recipes. She loved my food and one day said, “This is something that everyone has to do at home, because it is very healthy.”

Throughout the years those treasured moments and shared experiences have stayed in my heart until life and my profession provided me with the unique opportunity to mix my two passions: the art of cooking and hosting, together on my own cooking show. This is where I unleashed my imagination, making delicious original recipes and many traditional ones, but with a little twist. I made them more healthful without losing their particular “sazón” and flavor.

Only 44 percent of Hispanic women know that heart disease is their greatest health risk. Only one in three Hispanic women knows that heart disease is their number-one killer.

Both my Abuela and Nona learned that very simple changes in diet can have immediate and long-term benefits. Reducing the use of salt, sugar and fats in foods, limiting the consumption of processed meats and canned foods, and substituting whole grains for white flour can help improve the quality of an individual’s later years despite preexisting medical conditions.

One day my Abuela asked me, “How do poor people manage cooking or eating health, because doing so is expensive?”

I replied, “Abuela, the secret is not money. It is education. Most of the housewives make chicken stew with chicken skin. This is pure fat. Cooking healthy is to cook without the chicken skin. We’re used to frying foods, but we also can grill or griddle them. And you can also save money by not buying vegetable oil, butter or margarine. Forget about the breaded foods. If you cook soups or sauces for the entire week, when you freeze them for storage, the fat solidifies and is easier to remove. If you want to reduce salt, we can do this by adding spices or seasoning meals with lemon. These are some of the many options out there for healthy cooking, and as you see, we have not spent more; rather we have saved money.”

It is for my Nona and Abuela and the thousands of other Hispanic women who watch my show and motivate me that I offer my cooking as a platform to educate them in different ways. I strive to share with my viewing audience what I’ve learned — the pros and cons of the ingredients, how to replace unhealthful foods and prepare healthful recipes, and the risk factors for heart health and other diseases — and in an entertaining way, because, after all, our women are who give us that first breath of life and then encourage us to move forward. They are the heart of our families.

Cook healthfully. Do it for yourself, your family and your life.

Blast from the Past

Blast from the Past

Laid off from his dream job and broke, Bailey Hall goes back home with his tail between his legs and a severely bruised ego. It doesn’t help matters that the only work he can find is at his older sister’s day care. Now, instead of spending the day teaching high school students Shakespeare and Keats, he’s wiping snotty noses and tripping on building blocks. Then one rainy afternoon, his humiliation reaches a whole new low when David Walker comes in to pick up his baby nephew. Not only was David the most popular guy in high school, but Bailey harbored a secret crush on the guy. Bailey is both horrified and excited to see that, eight years later, David is just as hot as ever. He’s also very successful and wealthy, neither of which Bailey is. David spent the past years fulfilling his dream of becoming a successful lawyer and he finally has almost everything he’s ever wanted within his grasp. Then he goes into the daycare center and spots the one thing his libido has never been able to resist-Bailey. All through his senior year of high school, David lusted after the shy, dark-haired, freshman scholar. He’d been too afraid to act on his feelings at the time. Not only was Bailey too young for a relationship, but the teen had also been struggling with his sexuality. Although it was the hardest thing he’d ever done, David forced himself not to act on his feelings and kept his hands off Bailey. Now that they are both adults and he has Bailey in his sights again, David vows to finally give into his desires. But will Bailey welcome his attraction or will David have to live with nothing but his regrets to keep him company at night?

The Politics of Provisions: Food Riots, Moral Economy, and Market Transition in England, c. 1550-1850

The Politics of Provisions: Food Riots, Moral Economy, and Market Transition in England, c. 1550-1850

The ‘politics of provisions’ – forceful negotiations over sustenance – has created surprising contests in world history, particularly in times of market transition. In England a ‘politics of provisions’ evolved in a dialogue between popular riots and paternalist subsistence policies from Tudor dearths to the Victorian embrace of free-market doctrines. Hence provision politics was a core ingredient of both state-formation and of the emergence of the first market economy and society in England. This book is the first full-scale critical revision of E.P. Thompson’s seminal model of the ‘moral economy of the crowd’, which has had huge influence across the social sciences. It is the first synthesis of the many dispersed studies of three centuries of marketing and negotiations by riot over subsistence. By explaining such long-term shifts in patterns of political negotiation from parish-pump to Privy Council, this study offers a new view of why food riots were a more compelling and lasting bone of contention than enclosures, wages or votes.

‘Glory’ Wins Best Original Song At The 2015 Oscars

“Glory” from “Selma” won Best Original Song at the 2015 Oscars on Sunday night, beating out “Everything is Awesome” from “The Lego Movie,” “Grateful” from “Beyond The Lights,” “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” from “Glen Campbell… I’ll Be Me” and “Lost Stars” from “Begin Again.” John Legend and Common accepted the award after performing a moving rendition of the song to a tearful audience. “‘Selma’ is now because the struggle for justice is right now,” Legend said.

“Glory” was the frontrunner, after Legend and Common took home the Golden Globe for Best Original Song. “Knowing what we’re singing about is inspiring people as they march today in this present time, and knowing millions of people will watch the Oscars is such a huge honor,” Legend told HuffPost Entertainment in a recent interview. “It could not be a better combination of circumstances for us.”

It was a huge win for “Selma,” which made waves when its director Ava DuVernay was snubbed for a Best Director nod. The film was also nominated for Best Picture.

The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. Proof Even The World’s Worst Meditator Should Give It Another Try

Broody the Brain is like many of us who have yet to take up meditating: We’re intrigued by the well-documented benefits of the mindful practice, but we’ve struggled to ease into it. As a result, we assume it’s just not our thing.

But what if that struggle is due to our own misguided stereotypes of what meditation really is?

“Meditation isn’t leaving the world behind, it is being engaged, feeling content and kind,” Broody the Brain learns in the video above, created by Amit Sood, M.D., professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic and the author of The Mayo Clinic Guide to Stress-Free Living.

Meditation isn’t confined to any particular rules you may have heard; It can take the shape of simply thinking about what you’re grateful for when you wake up or smiling at a stranger in the elevator. The average day can be full of these “meditative micro-moments.”

If you’ve ever thought meditation wasn’t for you, check out the video above.

People With Disabilities Can Easily Find Accessible Spots With This App

Inspired by his own experiences, a filmmaker has created an app to help people with disabilities.

Jason Da Silva was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a disease that affects the central nervous system, in 2006, and uses a motorized scooter to get around, according to Mashable. As a filmmaker based in New York City, he quickly discovered that it wasn’t so easy for people with disabilities to maneuver around the city.

It was very frustrating,” Da Silva told Mashable back in 2013. “I was finding that the freedoms that I had — just simple things like meeting up with friends and things, it was becoming more and more difficult.”

With these challenges in mind, Da Silva created the AXS Map, a crowdsourced mobile app and website powered by Google Maps, that allows people with disabilities to find accessible spots. Users rate and review the wheelchair accessibility of restaurants, stores, hotels and other places.

The app launched in 2012, and Alice Cook, Da Silva’s wife and executive director of his nonprofit, AXS Lab, told Fast Company that it will eventually have a social feature. Da Silva and his team also host “mapathons” during which people are invited to get together to rate and review locations.

The filmmaker told Time.com that the ratings and reviews aspect of his app is crucial. While the 1990 Americans With Disabilities Act required businesses to become more accessible for people with disabilities, he said that in reality, this isn’t always the case. The reviews allow people to note specific details about the accessibility of a certain location, and then lets others know about those nuances.

Ultimately, Da Silva told Time, he hopes that his work can help more people understand the obstacles that those with disabilities face.

“People without disabilities don’t realize all the challenges that we face, like, ‘is a restroom accessible? Is there one small step outside a restaurant that would keep us from being able to get in?” Da Silva told the outlet. “Opening up the ratings to the community is an attempt to bridge the gap between people living with mobility issues and the larger communities that we live in.”

To learn more about AXS Map, visit its website here, or check out Da Silva’s nonprofit, AXS Lab here.

As I Lay Dying

I am dying, literally, at my home in Hollywood, of metastatic breast cancer, the only kind of breast cancer that kills. For six years I’ve known I was going to die. I just didn’t know when.

Then, a couple of weeks before Christmas, a new, deadly diagnosis gave me a deadline. No doctor would promise me I’d make it to 2015.

Your Clever Baby: How to Make the Most of Your Childs Potential

Your Clever Baby: How to Make the Most of Your Childs Potential

In this fascinating book, Dr. Carol Cooper argues that cleverness is not just about achieving a high I.Q. score or doing advanced math. It is also about emotional intelligence–that mix of common sense and social skills which helps a baby grow into a well-balanced child and positive youg adult. She starts with How Babies Develop and Learn, which explains that all children do better with the right style of parenting and schooling, then looks at development from birth to age 3. The New Arrival includes tips on feeding, holding and handling, and baby massage. Getting to Grips (3-6 months) advises on talking to babies and helping them to master movement. Sitting Up (6-12 months) promotes psychological as well as physical nourishment. On the Go (12-18 months) focuses on language skills and understanding the world. The Independent Spirit (18-24 months) turns the spotlight on emotional intelligence. Problem-solving is devoted to 2- and 3- year olds, with sections on mathematical skills, drawing and writing, language, and thought. Each stage is beautifully illustrated with Daniel Pangbourne''s photographs.
*By the age of 3, children have laid the foundation for all their future learning. This book explains what parents can do to make the most of their your child''s natuarl abilities.
*A practicing physician''s expert advice on your child''s development.
