9 Ways We Geeked Out About Science and Technology in 2014

2014 may go down in history as the geekiest year ever here at the White House.

Over the past 12 months, we’ve welcomed makers, coders, gamers, Nobel Prize winners, student scientists, and broadcast meteorologists to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., and we've adorned our halls with robots, 3D printers, and science projects. We've continued to gather top expert-geeks online to discuss a range of topics such as asteroids, superhero science, the science of cooking, and extreme weather (including one dialed in from the bottom of the ocean).

This year, the President and his Administration continued momentum on a range of science, technology, and innovation priorities that promise to benefit American citizens — from steps to unleash troves of government data as fuel for innovation, to releasing the most comprehensive scientific assessment ever of the domestic impacts of climate change, to telling the untold story of women in science and technology.

Here are some science and technology highlights from 2014:

1. President Obama became the first President to write a line of code.

Don’t Blame Obama If Race Relations Are Worse During His Presidency

President Barack Obama said Friday that conditions for black Americans have improved since he became president nearly six years ago. But as he said, blacks still lag behind whites.

“The gap in income between black and white America persists,” he said during a press conference. “This is a legacy of a troubled racial past. Jim Crow. This is not an excuse for black America, but it’s a fact.”

Obama is right.

This progress has come amidst a perception that race relations have grown worse.

A recent Bloomberg Politics poll said 53 percent of respondents say that race relations have worsened since Obama became president. Thirty-six percent said race relations have not changed and nine percent said they have improved.

The poll’s results have been shaped in part by conservative talk radio hosts and Fox News commentators, such as Bill O’Reilly, who this week blamed Obama for making race relations worse.

In reality, race relations haven’t worsened under Obama. It perhaps only seems that way to some people. Obama’s skin color has forced them to confront racism — America’s original sin, which was delivered with the slave ships in the 17th century.

During the first several decades of the United States, enslaved blacks who insisted on their freedom were whipped or murdered. The United States eventually fought a civil war over slavery. The Union’s triumph raised hopes of racial equality.

But those hopes were dashed in a rampage of Ku Klux Klan violence, but also in an insidious compromise between the North and the South whereby they reconciled their differences by excluding blacks.

America saw the emergence of Jim Crow laws that segregated the races — and such laws were brutally enforced.

Blacks fought in World War I and when they returned home, they demanded equality. Whites responded with violence. During the year after the end of the war, dozens of blacks were lynched — many of them wearing their Army uniforms.

The same thing happened after World War II. Black soldiers fought in a war to end racism, and then returned to find a country as racist as the one they had left. Once again, a number of black soldiers were murdered in their uniforms so other blacks would know their place.

During the 1960s, race relations worsened as blacks sought an end to racial discrimination. Civil rights activists were beaten in Selma, Alabama. When hundreds of black children marched for equality in Birmingham, Alabama, police used high-pressure hoses and attack dogs on them. Medgar Evers and Martin Luther King Jr. were assassinated.

The Republican Party responded to the racial unrest with its Southern Strategy, using racism to recruit Southern conservative voters from the Democratic Party.

Where were the complaints of worsening race relations when the George H.W. Bush campaign used racist televising ads – the Willie Horton spots – during the 1988 Presidential campaign? Or when thousands of black voters had their ballots invalidated in Duval County in Florida when George W. Bush barely won Florida and the presidency in 2000.

The Southern Poverty Law Center reported a spike in the number of hate groups after Obama was elected president in 2008. Since then, Republican legislators have increased efforts to restrict blacks from voting. In 2013, conservative Supreme Court justices chipped away at the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert of Texas said that Obama “has done more to stir up racial tension and violence” than any president since the 1960s.

If race relations are indeed worse since Obama became president, don’t blame him.

Maya Angelou’s Harlem Hopscotch: Official Music Video | Oprah Winfrey Network

The official music video for Dr. Maya Angelou’s “Harlem Hopscotch.” Dr. Angelou’s inspiring song is featured on the newly released album “Caged Bird Songs,” produced by RoccStar and Shawn Rivera of the R&B vocal pop group Az Yet. The song is about encouraging everyone, especially young people to persevere through life despite any obstacles! The game of hopscotch is symbolic of the difficulties of life and the obstacles that some face, whether they be wealthy or poor. The music video was directed by and features choreography from Emmy award-winning duo Tabitha and Napoleon Dumo, a/k/a NappyTabs, best known for their work on the hit television series “So You Think You Can Dance.”

“Harlem Hopscotch” was shot on location in Harlem, New York, and several Los Angeles locations, including the studios at YouTube Space LA, Venice Beach and downtown Los Angeles. The video features appearances by actress and singer Nia Peeples (“Fame”, “Pretty Little Liars”), dancer/choreographer Derek Hough, actor Alfonso Ribeiro, actress/singer Zendaya, dancer/choreographer Ian Eastwood, Quest Crew and dancers from “So You Think You Can Dance” and “America’s Best Dance Crew.”

Dr. Maya Angelou, an iconic American writer, poet, actor, dancer, director, composer, lecturer, civil activist and one of the most renowned and influential voices of our time, worked on this album prior to her death on May 28, 2014. “Caged Bird Songs” is a unique musical collaboration produced by RoccStar and Shawn Rivera, that thoughtfully blends the iconic poet’s words and vocal performances with contemporary hip-hop beats.

Dr. Angelou’s grandson, Colin Johnson, reminisces that music was such a huge part of his grandmother’s life. “She loved everything, from pop to country and, of course, hip-hop. With her dedication to social activism and how she illuminated the struggles and injustices of the urban experience through prose, there’s a direct correlation to hip-hop today. She was really excited about her street-wise commentary being presented in this way.”

Why Women Need a New Bedtime Story

The kitchen counters are clean. You’re ready for bed. Maybe you floss. You have chipped away at your daily checklist, but your dream list remains untouched. You pull up the covers, exhale and sink into a moment of comfort. But as tired as you feel, you lie blinking and thinking. You review what didn’t get done. Your mind goes back to that great idea that takes more energy than you have and you wonder how it will ever fit into your life.

I am one of more than 30 percent of women in the United States who experience symptoms of insomnia. Exhaustion has been my constant companion from an intense 10-year career with a global management consulting company and then the demands of motherhood. Each passing year I became more fatigued and more self-critical of my inability to hold it all together, until I found myself with barely enough energy to get my daughters to school. I finally discovered that I had an undiagnosed autoimmune condition.

Having this illness was a huge wake up call for me. I had unfairly and unkindly pushed my body beyond its limits, driven by my own inability to stop. My daily medication was not going to fix the situation. I realized that for my body to heal, I needed to fundamentally shift my relationship with myself. My medication continues to serve as a daily reminder to stay connected to my physical well-being, to be gentle with myself, and to mindfully find ease in a world that doesn’t necessarily hand it out freely.

I see my story reflected back in so many women. They work hard and manage so much, often becoming physically depleted, and all the while, being very hard on themselves.

2014-12-20-BedtimeStory.jpg

The end of the day is when we are often the most critical of ourselves. The sleepless midnight hours fill our heads and hearts with stories. Unlike the playful books we read to children, women’s bedtime stories tend to be full of self-judgment. I Should, I Need to Be, and I Wish replace the chapters from childhood books that used to transport us to new places of possibility, let us try on different hats or wings, find a little magic, slay a dragon or two, and drift off to sleep.

I decided it was time for a new bedtime story for women — one that would allow women to tuck themselves in with self-care and compassion at the end of the day.

During my interview for a mini-documentary series produced by Elizabeth Arden called Her Story, I was asked, “What makes a woman beautiful?” I remember formulating my own answer. I immediately smiled as I started to mentally gather all the deeply beautiful women in my life. As my collage of beautiful women grew, I struggled to whittle down the bounty of amazing qualities I saw into a single answer. In the end, I did find one common trait. For me, a woman’s beauty grows as she discovers what in life makes her feel most alive, and then carves out time in her life to nurture that part of herself. You feel her energy. It draws you to her. Being in her company inspires you to work a little more at your own fulfillment.

It was then that I realized it is difficult to feel beautiful and critical of yourself at the same time. I wrote Knowing Beautiful from a deep desire to give every woman the same opportunity to ask the powerful question, “What makes me beautiful?” and to hear her own answer, feel the beauty within her, and know how her beauty touches the world.

No matter what is on your nightstand, or whether you’re a woman or a man, it is important to become aware of how you connect with yourself each night. The words you choose for your bedtime story will shape not just your dreams, but also your path forward.

How would you like your new chapter to start?

Learning Resilience From a Master

The last 10 years of Henri Matisse’s life were far from what most of us would think of as joyful. His marriage was over, he was diagnosed with cancer and underwent a number of painful surgeries, and his beloved daughter was imprisoned and tortured by the Gestapo for aiding the French Resistance. Who could have blamed him for calling it quits and sinking into deep despair? And yet, during this dark time he created the most electrifyingly joyful work of his career.

Confined to a wheelchair and crippled by pain, Matisse never stopped working. In fact, rather than a period of decline, it became what Matisse described as a “seconde vie.” He transformed the darkness into an intensely vibrant and productive period, creating “cut-outs” -the cut paper collages he described as “painting with scissors.” Unlike actual painting, painting with scissors could be done from his wheelchair or bed.

Matisse once famously said, “Work cures everything,” and one cannot help but consider the therapeutic value of the cut-outs for Matisse. Studies show that meaningful work and a sense of purpose–a reason to get out of bed in the morning–are linked with longevity and life satisfaction. Because of pain and physical limitations, Matisse often couldn’t get out of bed in the morning so he rose to the challenge and worked from his bedside instead:

You see as I am obliged to remain often in bed because of the state of my health, I have made a little garden all around me where I can walk… There are leaves, fruits, a bird.

The “little garden” he refers to are the cut-outs pinned to the walls surrounding his bed. They served as ideal stand-ins for the natural world, providing solace and beauty in a make shift studio.

Matisse made it work. He cultivated and created an environment that enabled him to pursue his passion and immerse himself in this labor-intensive work. Rather than serving as a metaphor for decline or loss, these works pulsate with life and vitality:

This new lease of life led to an extraordinary burst of expression, the culmination of half a century of work, but also to a radical renewal that made it possible for him to create what he had always struggled for: ‘I have needed all that time to reach the stage where I can say what I want to say.’

Matisse embodies what people refer to today as resilience. With passion and perseverance, he navigated his way through this challenging period and found beauty in the darkness. He once said, “There are always flowers for those who want to see them.”

Even in the autumn of his life Matisse chose to see the flowers.

Why Even A 12-Month Ban On Blood Donations From Gay Men Makes No Sense

The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday ended the lifetime ban on blood donations from men who have sex with men.

But the agency said it would continue to bar donations by men who have had a sexual encounter with another man in the previous year, disappointing prominent gay rights groups and HIV/AIDS researchers, who called the yearlong waiting period medically unnecessary and unscientific. The FDA said the change “will better align the deferral period with that of other men and women at increased risk for HIV infection.”

“The one-year deferral notion constitutes symbolic progress, but is not any more warranted than a lifetime ban,” wrote Dr. Eli Adashi, professor of medical science at Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School, in an email to HuffPost.

The 31-year-old ban on donations from gay and bisexual men had its roots in the AIDS fear that was pervasive when the disease first appeared in the nation’s blood supply. Since then, HIV testing has gotten faster and more accurate. Additionally, testing of donated blood for HIV and other diseases is routine.

Over the years, pressure mounted for the FDA to change the ban. The American Medical Association recommended that gay and bisexual men be evaluated individually, and that risk be assessed through behavior, not sexual orientation.

“The lifetime ban on blood donation for men who have sex with men is discriminatory and not based on sound science,” said Dr. William Kobler, an AMA spokesman.

Members of Congress spoke out against the ban.

Gay rights groups also advocated that the FDA drop the gay blood ban, and replace it with screening questions that address specific risky sexual behaviors regardless of sexual orientation or gender.

Aspects of such a system have been in place in Italy since 2001. There, potential blood donors are assessed individually with questionnaires and face-to-face interviews with practitioners.

Adashi co-authored an op-ed in the July issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association that argued a 12-month deferral on donations from gay men is “equally arbitrary” to a lifelong ban.

“Sexual orientation is not a disqualifier; instead, sexual orientation is one component of individualized risk assessment,” Adashi wrote. Research suggests that Italy’s new policy hasn’t led to a disproportionate increase in HIV-positive blood donations from gay men.

The FDA shift still leaves a large swath of gay men — those who only have sex with HIV-negative partners or practice safe sex with HIV-positive partners — unable to donate blood. At the same time, people who may be at risk for HIV are not barred from donating.

Beyond the discriminatory nature of the ban on donations, there is a real need for more blood.

The Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, which studies LGBT issues, has calculated the number of men who would likely donate, and the pints of blood that would become available, under three scenarios: completely lifting the ban, a 12-month deferral, and a five-year deferral.

As you can see, a 12-month deferral excludes thousands of potential donations from the nation’s blood supply.

The risk of getting HIV from a blood transfusion is incredibly low. According to the FDA, one in 2 million cases are acquired through transfusions.

Duty and Desire

Duty and Desire

Bored and stuck at home with her baby, Shanice crashes into trouble when she drives straight into Brannon Lamont’s Mercedes. He’s rich, brash, handsome and just the sort of man she knows she could never have. Which makes his lunch invitation all the more tempting. Brannon’s been licking his wounds after a humiliating break-up, but when Shanice enters his life, he begins to wonder if she’s the kind of woman he’s needed all along. There’s only one thing standing in their way – Shanice is married. She won’t cheat on her husband like he cheated on her, which leaves her with a decision to make. Will she choose duty, desire or freedom? This short story is roughly 9,500 words long and is not intended for readers under the age of eighteen. EXCERPT The cool bed-sheets made me convulse in one big shiver and my skin came up in goose bumps. I snuggled down, closing my eyes as I imagined what might have happened if that afternoon’s kiss had gone on any longer. I thought of Brannon touching me, kissing me. I wrote the story in my mind – he took my hand in the park and led me away to an expensive hotel. Too needy to wait, we kissed in the lift, hands seeking out flesh underneath our clothes. When the doors opened, he lifted me into his arms and carried me to the room. I could see it all so vividly, feel his weight when he laid me on the bed and got on top of me. Arching my back up off the mattress, I sighed as I remembered his tongue in my mouth. I thought my libido had died when I had Jacob, but here it was, roaring back to life. Brannon. I wanted him so much. It was difficult to believe he wanted me too.

Women’s Health in Clinical Practice

Women’s Health in Clinical Practice

Traditionally, women’s health has been synonymous with obstetrics and gynecology. With the exception of Family Medicine physicians who are trained in obstetric and gynecologic issues, most primary care physicians have received little training in reproductive health issues even though they care for women and girls. In recent years, there has been growing recognition that sex differences do exist between the organ systems of women and men, and research about male and female physiologic differences has bolstered the growing body of knowledge about sex differences. Women’s Health: A Handbook for Primary Care presents the most recent changes in current research and provides the reader with an easily accessible reference to common women’s health issues. The topics in this text range from health problems that largely affect only women, like cervical cancer and breast disease, to health problems that present differently in women than in men, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Chapters on polycystic ovary syndrome and oral health issues address health problems that bring together multiple organ systems including reproductive, cardiovascular and dental health. There are also useful chapters not typically found in primary care texts like eating disorders, interpersonal violence and sexual health. Women’s Health: A Handbook for Primary Care is succinct, well organized, and contains easily understood, practical information for the most common health problems seen in women. This volume is a valuable text for anyone who practices primary care medicine.

The Year in Review: Our 5 Favorite Reach Higher Moments of 2014

2014 has been an exciting year for First Lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher initiative, and given that the initiative launched in May, we had a difficult time limiting our favorite moments to just five.

The initiative is the First Lady's effort to inspire every student in America to take charge of their future by completing their education past high school, whether at a professional training program, a community college, or a four-year college or university.

1. Kick-Off Event

To kick off the Reach Higher initiative in May, the First Lady challenged everyone across the country to wear their college gear to inspire students to take charge of their future by completing some form of education beyond high school. She also participated in San Antonio’s fourth-annual College Signing Day, celebrating students' commitments to higher education.

Cuba Says It Has A Right To Grant Asylum To US Fugitives

HAVANA (AP) — Cuba said Monday that it has a right to grant asylum to U.S. fugitives, the clearest sign yet that the communist government has no intention of extraditing America’s most-wanted woman despite the warming of bilateral ties.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has urged President Barack Obama to demand the return of fugitive Joanne Chesimard before restoring full relations under a historic detente announced by Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro last week. Chesimard was granted asylum by Fidel Castro after she escaped from the prison where she was serving a sentence for killing a New Jersey state trooper in 1973 during a gunbattle after being stopped on the New Jersey Turnpike.

Asked if returning fugitives was open to negotiation, Cuba’s head of North American affairs, Josefina Vidal, told The Associated Press that “every nation has sovereign and legitimate rights to grant political asylum to people it considers to have been persecuted. … That’s a legitimate right.”

“We’ve explained to the U.S. government in the past that there are some people living in Cuba to whom Cuba has legitimately granted political asylum,” Vidal said.

“There’s no extradition treaty in effect between Cuba and the U.S.,” she added.

In a letter to the White House made public Sunday, Christie said Cuba’s asylum for Chesimard, who has changed her name to Assata Shakur, was “an affront to every resident of our state, our country, and in particular, the men and women of the New Jersey State Police, who have tirelessly tried to bring this killer back to justice.”

Later Monday, during a live interview with a local television anchor, Christie responded to Vidal’s statement that Cuba has the right to grant to political asylum to those who have been persecuted.

“So Joanne Chesimard, a cold-blooded cop-killer, convicted by a jury of her peers, in what is without question the fairest and most just criminal justice system in the world — certainly much more just than anything that’s happened in Cuba under the Castro brothers. She is now, according to an official of the Cuban government, persecuted,” he said.

He added, “these thugs in Cuba have given her political asylum for 30 years. It’s unacceptable.”

The first woman ever placed on the FBI’s most-wanted terrorist list was living so openly in Havana that her number was listed in the phone book.

The FBI and the New Jersey State Police have offered a $ 2 million reward for information leading to Shakur’s capture.

Bernadette Meehan, a spokeswoman for the White House’s National Security Council, said the Obama administration will “continue to press in our engagement with the Cuban government for the return of U.S. fugitives in Cuba to pursue justice for the victims of their crimes.”

Several infamous convicts and suspects in high-profile American cases live openly in Cuba, as are others convicted of less serious crimes. Among these are a woman convicted of killing a police officer four decades ago, a man sought for a 31-year-old armed robbery, airplane hijackers and dozens of people accused of Medicare and insurance fraud.

Cuba occasionally returns people convicted or suspected of committing crimes in the U.S., but it doesn’t observe traditional extradition and refuses to send anyone back for a crime Havana considers political in nature, according to the State Department.

The Castro government’s frequent position on returning fugitives has been to ask for the U.S. to return people wanted in Cuba.

“We’ve reminded the U.S. government that in its country they’ve given shelter to dozens and dozens of Cuban citizens,” Vidal said. “Some of them accused of horrible crimes, some accused of terrorism, murder and kidnapping, and in every case the U.S. government has decided to welcome them.”

In Cuba’s first detailed public response to Obama’s historic announcement last week, Vidal said Cuba is open to all of Obama’s moves to improve relations and strengthen private enterprise and civil society on the island. That includes U.S. equipment to improve the Cuban Internet and U.S. exports to Cuba’s new class of private business owners.

“Our president has said we welcome President Obama’s decision to introduce the most significant changes in relations with Cuba in 54 years,” Vidal said. “That includes the entire package.”

Cuba has historically imposed heavy regulations on the Internet and private business as it has blamed the U.S. embargo for the problems of the island’s stagnant economy.

Vidal said the U.S. has been to blame for Cuba’s economic problems, which include crumbling infrastructure, low levels of foreign investment and rates of Internet access that are among the lowest in the world. The opening is an opportunity to show what the country can do unshackled, she said.

“Look back. When have you seen a negative response to the American government removing any type of restriction?” Vidal said. “What we say is, ‘Get rid of the excuse and put us to the test!’”

Cuba is waiting to see exactly how the Obama administration will implement the changes, she said.

Obama’s announcement included a very general list of reforms and left a series of open questions about how far the U.S. could go to create deeper economic ties with Cuba. The Commerce and Treasury departments are expected to begin publishing details of the new measures in coming weeks, changes that will include relaxation of the stringent rules governing American travel to Cuba.

Vidal said Cuba would only know how it would manage its end of the new relationship once the American government plan was clearer.

“We have to see how we are going to implement things,” she said.

Home for the Holidays Survival Guide

Could you imagine throwing a holiday dinner party and not preparing for it? I’ll give you a scenario. It’s Dec. 24. There’s a knock on the door. Your family arrives all dressed up for a party and you are lying on the sofa watching Scandal in your sweats. You offer them a half bottle of wine you opened days earlier that is starting to go south and tell them they can help themselves to leftovers in the fridge. Would you ever do that? Of course not!

Well guess what? Most of us arrive at holiday events so emotionally unprepared we might as well be un-showered and in our pajamas. I am referring to people not mentally designing how they want the holiday to go and believing they have NO control over what happens. That’s not true!

I’m going to give you a few tips on how to prepare for the holidays with your family and make it is as great and connected as it can be no matter what your situation.

HOLIDAY SURVIVAL GUIDE

1) Design your holiday!
Have a vision of your holiday. Sit down with a notebook and imagine how you want your holiday to unfold. If you know Aunt Beth is a horrible cook then you could imagine bringing a dish that everyone loves. If there are topics that could potentially poison the well at dinner, then declare a ban on particular subject matters. For example, your sister Susie gets sad every holiday because your mom asks her where are her grandchildren when Susie is 44 years old and still single. Tell your mom no bringing up grandchildren around Susie. If mixing politics and wine creates loud heated debates in your family, then you imagine having a sweet conversation with the two main political instigators in your family and ask them for a moratorium on politics for the holiday season. See if that makes the holiday more fun for everyone.

2) Expect the expected and don’t get annoyed when it happens!
Sometimes the holidays can feel like deja vu. For example, it’s the last night of Hanukkah. Your dad is on his third drink and starts to tell the same story he’s told the past several Hanukkahs about how he met Al Pacino at a casino in Reno, but this time he’s exaggerating about how they are now Facebook friends. And while your dad is telling his story, you look over at your mother who is wolfing down her second slice of pumpkin pie and explaining how good she is doing on her diet. She hasn’t lost a pound in over 10 years and is 25 pounds over her goal weight.

The scene makes you want to crawl under the table. Your reaction is just as predictable and harsh to your own life. You switch to tequila, contemplate turning on the TV to drown out your parents, as your inner dialogue goes on a verbal tirade, “No wonder I don’t believe in love for me!”

Instead of going down the same rabbit hole you do every year, stop and consider how to make the same scene fun? Don’t get annoyed. Have a sense of humor. Laugh. This requires a lot of perspective and compassion but the good news is, when you lighten up about the negative tendencies of your family you can lighten up about yours too. That gives you a way better chance of intervening in both.

Grow up your emotional intelligence. The difference between, “So what? They are cute,” and “How could they be this screwed up?” is where your personal CHOICE lives. Choose to see the good and let some things slide.

3) Beware of any personal pity parties you feel you are entitled to throw for yourself this year.
Self-judgment is very popular over the holidays, especially as we compare our lives to where they were last holiday season or if we believe we aren’t where we should be. If you’re disappointed in some area of your life, trust me, you’re not alone. Everyone is disappointed about something from this past year. The good news is, even though the end of the year seems final, it’s not. Time is a continuum and today is just as good a day as any to start a new better habit and/or to stop berating yourself (it does no good any way).

In the meantime, when you’re with the family, here’s a trick: Stop focusing on yourself and pay attention to what’s going on with the people around you. My husband sometimes has to remind me to shift my focus this way. He’ll say, “It’s not about you, Lauren.” Maybe someone you’re close to could remind you if you forget?

4) Take on the holiday spirit and kill the Scrooge in you!
It’s easy to dazzle people during the holiday season and I’m not talking about buying expensive gifts for everyone. I’m referring to doing something special that would make people happy. And just so you know, this coaching is for me too!

Choose to have happy holidays because you say so. Then make them great. Figure out what festive thing you could do that would surprise people. Like, bake a holiday dish for your new neighbors you haven’t met yet. Or volunteer to help your husband do something that would totally surprise him like clean out the garage or go to a horror movie he is dying to see but you would rather pass on. There are so many potential options to be festive and fun this holiday season. You still have time. Start today!

I hope I’ve reminded you that just because it’s the holidays it doesn’t mean you get a break from designing your life! Right now is one of the more precious times of the year to create what you want and get a great return on your investment.

Believe that this is the best life ever and rock your holiday season!

Love,
Lauren

Belling the Cat at Christmas Time

Dr Seuss once advised, “You’ve got brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.”

Not if you have rocks in your head.

2014-12-22-GregOBrienFamilyCopy.jpg

Since I was a boy, my mother said that I had rocks in my head. Now, after decades, the rocks are literally calcifying, obstructing signals to my brain. Early onset Alzheimer’s will do that.

I’ve always been a good rainmaker, the art of inducing precipitation, in this case generating puddles for the family through my writing and political consulting to pay bills, but of late the signals are crossing in a slow progression of this disease. While I was never an exemplary steward, I’m spending money today in odd ways, at times like a drunken sailor. At the directive of my doctors, I’ve turned all my credit cards over to my wife, Mary Catherine, who now views all my online bank and debit card statements daily to make sure nothing is awry. Surprises were occurring regularly, until I was forced to hand over a concealed American Express card that I had kept to maintain a at least a sense of self.

Recently, I’ve conceded to a smart phone application that allows family to track my whereabouts, like a heat-seeking missile, in the event I get lost, a regular occurrence at times. My Irish heart instructs me to laugh at this intrusion of privacy; try to find the humor in it. Alzheimer’s has its droll moments if one learns to dance with this disease, rather than a frontal assault that is impossible to win. With this avant-guard tracking system, I feel like a character in the ancient fable about belling the cat — a story about a council of mice trying to nullify the threat of a marauding feline. The stratagem is roundly applauded until one mouse asks the probing question: who will offer to place the bell on the cat? The mice all make excuses, a teachable moment about fundamental execution of a sage plan, a lesson about the gap between brainstorming and delivering on an impossible task.

“Been there, done that,” my wife interjected in a family conference. “He’s going to wear the bell!” Does “he” have a name? I asked later in agreeing to the tracking device.

The final straw for my wife was Christmas a few years ago. I’m a Clark Griswold, “Sparky” kind of dad; each Christmas Eve after church service the family has an intimate dinner at the Chatham Bars Inn, overlooking Chatham’s pastoral inner harbor, then we ceremoniously watch Chevy Chase’s Christmas Vacation. We still laugh so hard we cry — aping all the iconic lines seconds before they are delivered.

I usually go overboard for Christmas, akin to Evil Knievel attempting to jump the Grand Canyon on a revved up motorcycle. This particular Christmas was no exception in holiday largesse, but early that Christmas Eve was a moment of unusual stillness for me. Listening to “Silent Night” on a speaker outsider a retail store at noon, I was suddenly flushed with the fear that I had no gifts, that everyone else in the family had gone Christmas shopping but me. I began to panic. So, I whipped out the American Express Gold, and within 15 minutes bought close to a thousand dollars of stuff that I had no recollection of buying — the kind of crap nobody wants: shot glasses with Boston Celtic logos; paper plates and plastic forks; a doormat; medallions for my daughter with Tom Brady’s picture. I wrapped the “presents” like a good elf, placed them under the tree.

To my horror, on Christmas morning, I realized that I had bought the mother lode weeks earlier, nice presents actually, and when it came time to open my inane offerings of late, I first got stares from my wife and kids, Brendan, Colleen and Conor, some humiliating laughs, a few loving cautions, and then a big hand from oldest son Brendan — asking for the American Express card so that everything could be returned for a credit.

“Talk about pissing your money away. I hope you kids see what a silly waste of resources this was,” my wife must have thought in her best impersonation of Clark’s mother-in-law Frances after he had placed 250 strands of lights with 100 bulbs on each strand for a total of 25,000 light bulbs on the house, and none of them worked.

I myself was stunned. “If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn’t be more surprised,” I thought in a Clark Griswold moment.

California College Students Call For K-12 Consent Education

California college students are demanding schools teach prospective students about sexual consent long before they arrive on campus to help prevent college rape.

Student activists from San Diego State University and from the University of California’s Berkeley and Santa Barbara campuses listed three demands to “Take Back The Campus” on Dec. 9. One pertains to prospective students:

“We recommend consent education in K12. College is too late for people to learn about bodily autonomy and respect.”

California is the only state with a “yes means yes” law for colleges, requiring partners to affirmatively agree to sex. The law has been controversial, showing that consent can be a tricky subject.

Students “get to universities and we expect them to behave like they’re supposed to without any prior understanding of what consent looks like,” Meghan Warner, director of the Associated Students of the University of California Sexual Assault Commission and a UC Berkeley student who endorsed the demands, told The Huffington Post.

“Consent is not just for intercourse. It’s for all aspects of our lives, and people aren’t understanding or being taught that,” Warner said. Consent education also covers verbal harassment, healthy relationships — romantic or otherwise — and being aware of people’s space.

“Concerned parents might think we’re talking about consent in purely sexual context, when really we’re talking on a day-to-day basis,” Alejandra Melgoza, a Take Back the Night coordinator at UC Santa Barbara, told HuffPost. A major aspect of consent education is as simple as “keep your hands to yourself,” she said.

“We have to start from very simple things, and that’s how we get to big things,” Melgoza said. For example, Melgoza said, traumatic memories of child abuse may be triggered by an unsolicited hug, so students could be taught to greet others appropriately and “acknowledge people’s space.”

Activists at San Diego State began composing the demands following a Take Back The Night march on campus, where counter-demonstrators waved sex toys, threw eggs and shouted obscenities at marchers. The activists called for the resignation of their student body president, who belongs to a fraternity accused of taunting marchers. Another fraternity was removed from campus following the march.

The activists contend that K-12 consent education would have benefits beyond colleges. “It’s better to focus on everybody, not just the few who attend universities,” Warner said.

Andra Tharp, a violence prevention health scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told HuffPost that it’s important to teach teenagers about consent because they’re at “a critical developmental window when we can instill these skills about healthy relationships.” Tharp leads an initiative called Dating Matters, which engages youth, peers, educators and the community to prevent dating violence among middle school and high school students.

Sexual violence “can start as soon as dating begins,” Tharp said. She pointed to a CDC report that shows 42.2 percent of female rape victims were attacked before age 18.

Tharp acknowledged that some schools and parents are uncomfortable with teaching younger students about sex and healthy relationships. She said these programs “don’t encourage youth to date, but they give youth the skills to be healthy and safe in relationships when and if they do begin relationships.”

Phyllida Burlingame, reproductive justice project director at the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California, told HuffPost that “sex education in California schools has a focus on healthy relationships and building communication and decision-making skills. This will help young people at whatever age they become sexually active.”

Still, student activists said they believe more should be done to address consent in schools.

“Sex ed in California — and everywhere else — is really bad,” Warner said. “If we can’t even get basic, accurate sex ed in schools, I’m assuming getting consent education won’t be easy. But that doesn’t mean we’re not going to fight for it.”
