Traditional Conical Rwandan Basket with Lid – Black

Traditional Conical Rwandan Basket with Lid – Black

Outlet! Was .95! Baskets have served many functions in Rwandan history – holding food, celebrating weddings, and carrying secrets from one woman to another. This traditional basket is handwoven by the artisans of Gahaya Links – a group founded in 2003 by Janet Nkubana and Joy Ndungutse, two sisters who are improving the rural Rwandan economy through the marketing of artisan handicrafts. The baskets are made from natural fibers, utilizing a technique that has been practiced for almost a thousand years. Rwanda, a tiny and extremely poor country in the lakes region of East Africa, experienced a devastating civil war in 1994. Handicrafts such as these baskets form a major source of income for Rwandan people – and are a testament to the strength of the proud Rwandan people and their commitment to weaving a lasting peace. Without lid, basket measures approximately 4.5″ T x 5″ dia. (11.4 x 12.7 cm), and the lid is about 5″ T (12.7 cm). A tiny looped handle sits at the tip of the lid. Handwoven in and fairly traded from Rwanda.

Former Sen. Al D’Amato Kicked Off JetBlue Flight After Trying To Lead Passenger Rebellion

Former Sen. Alfonse D’Amato (R-N.Y.), was kicked off a JetBlue flight on Monday, apparently after criticizing the captain’s actions during hours of delays.

As he was escorted off the plane by deputies, D’Amato tried to rally fellow passengers. Part of the incident at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was caught on video.

“We can still speak in this country,” D’Amato, who served in the Senate from 1981 to 1999, said in the video. “I am making an appeal to all you people. You want to know why? Stand up for what’s right and walk out with me.”

Later, he added:  “If you don’t have the cojones to stand up and walk out too, that’s your fault.”

At least one passenger appeared to leave with the 79-year-old ex-politician. Others could be heard jeering the police escorts.

Some of the passengers blamed the captain and the airline. Layla Delarmelina told Newsday the captain had asked some passengers from the front to move to the back of the plane for better weight distribution, but few people switched seats.

“The captain wasn’t doing anything so (D’Amato) got up and confronted the people in the front and asked them to go to the back,” Delarmelina was quoted as saying. “No one was moving so he flipped out on them.”

Jacqueline Galante, who also witnessed the incident, told the New York Daily News that D’Amato was speaking for the passengers who were frustrated by the delays.

They shame-walked him to the front of the plane,” Galante told the newspaper. “He was not ranting and raving…If it happened to him, it could happen to anyone.”

D’Amato confronted the captain before leaving:

“Is this the captain?” D’Amato said.

“Yes sir,” the captain replied.

“You are a poor excuse,” he said. “If you were a leader, you would have had the two or three people who should have been sent back, sent back.”

“Thank you for your opinion,” the captain said.

A D’Amato spokesman told The New York Times that both the airline and the former senator later apologized.

Anyone who knows Sen. D’Amato knows he speaks his mind,” Gary Lewi was quoted as saying. “JetBlue has apologized to the senator for overreacting, and the senator apologized for speaking his mind at a time when he clearly had left his patience at the gate.”

JetBlue did not comment on the specifics.

“If a customer is causing a conflict on the aircraft, it is standard procedure to ask the customer to deplane, especially if the crew feels the situation runs a risk of escalation in-flight,” airline spokesman Morgan Johnston told the New York Post.

Here’s to the Swimmers & the Spectators: A Lesson in Vulnerability.

I had just finished a set when she walked by, carrying the same hot pink swim bag I have, except she was three decades younger. I could tell by her stride, she was precocious, tenacious, an independent thinker and a fish in the water, just like I am.

She waved at me with her kickboard. I waved back with my paddle.

The girl and I were the only ones in the pool. The sun hadn’t risen above the building yet. It was too early, too cold and too quiet for criticism.

I heard him before I saw him, every three strokes as I turned my head into the pocket: “Streamline! Streamline! Nine strokes from the middle! One! Twoooo! Threeee!” He was creating anxious waves in the placid Sunday morning air. I didn’t care for his disruptive ways, but I wasn’t going to let him ruin my ritual.

I finished another set and put my paddles down. It was impossible not to notice him: sitting in a chair directly in front of her lane, paper coffee cup in one hand, iPhone in the other, his baseball hat tilted to one side (not on purpose), his glasses slightly slanted to the other side. Everything about him appeared askew, including his left ankle crossed over his right thigh, knee bouncing: a product of too much caffeine and repressed shame and anger channeled through vicarious parenting.

“I want to put on my fins for the next set, Dad.” She took a chug from her ladybug sippy cup.
“Fins are way too easy.”
“No they’re not!”
She exclaimed with confidence.
“Fine. Put on your fins then.” He continued to bark at her until I finished my last set.

I got out and dried myself off. The girl took a rest after removing her fins, panting and clinging to the wall like a barnacle trying to break free. We made eye contact.

“You’re doing awesome!” I waved again.
“Thanks. This is my dad. He’s my coach. I hate it!” She deflected the truth with humor.
“I don’t blame you.” I did the same, except we both knew we weren’t joking, he didn’t though, he laughed: “You should see me during tennis lessons!”
“I can only imagine,” I said snidely.
“You sure swim the distance. You do master swim?”
“No. I swim for sanity. Do you do master swim?”
“Ha. No, I don’t swim. I’m not in shape, I can hardly make a lap.”

I wanted to walk over and push his chair in the pool, with him in it.
“Maybe it would be helpful since you’re coaching her.”
He shrugged his fleece adorned shoulders: “I guess, but I’d have to get in shape first.”
“Or, you could just start swimming, that’ll get you in shape.”
“Eh, you’re probably right…”

When I first started writing publicly, I was deeply affected by the criticism of others about my work. Trolls, strangers, acquaintances, friends and some peripheral family members had many things to say, some good and some downright unsupportive and nasty. To counter the naysayers, my therapist offered me the words of Brené Brown, which I’ve never forgotten:

A lot of cheap seats in the arena are filled with people who never venture onto the floor. They just hurl mean-spirited criticisms and put-downs from a safe distance. The problem is, when we stop caring what people think and stop feeling hut by cruelty, we lose our ability to connect. But when we’re defined by what people think, we lose the courage to be vulnerable. Therefore, we need to be selective about the feedback we let into our lives. For me, if you’re not in the arena getting your ass kicked, I’m not interested in your feedback. ~Brené Brown, Rising Strong

People who criticize others for doing what they love are terrified of vulnerability, because, they themselves are paralyzed by the thoughts of others. They can’t conceive of what it’s like to love something so much that you’ll get up on a cold Sunday morning to jump into the water, or wake at 5AM to pour your heart out, no matter what anyone has to say about it.

It’s easy to sit far enough away from the water where you can’t get splashed. The spectator perspective dons the illusion, that you can see it all: what’s right and what’s wrong, what’s good and what’s bad, how to do it better and faster. But, the truth is, you don’t know what it’s like or what it takes until you’ve typed all of the keys and done all of the laps. You just don’t know.

I am selective these days, about what I let in and what I don’t. I hear it all, I even feel it, but I only choose to trust the people who are in it, too. They tend to have the least amount of criticism, because, they’re too busy doing what they love; all they can usually muster is a wave and a thumbs up.

I wholeheartedly agree with Brené Brown. I’m in it with her, putting myself out there, in there. I’m in that arena, too, getting my ass kicked. There are many of us in here.

So, I write this for the little girl in lane 8 and all of my teammates, and to you, the spectators. We welcome you to join us in here, but if you’re not interested in getting your ass kicked, too, then we’re not interested in your feedback.

I packed up my swim gear and swung my hot pink bag over my shoulder. I walked in front of his chair and leaned into the lane:“You’re a great swimmer.” She believed me, I could tell. It takes one to know one.

The Year of Courage

Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.
―Anais Nin

Years ago I gave up New Year’s Resolutions, because they always fell apart for me by March! Now instead I choose a theme each year – something I want to ponder, practice, and live into.

2016 was the year of noticing. I practiced noticing all year and got better and better at it – noticing small things and large patterns, how beautiful aging faces really are, and what people leave unsaid.

I’ve named 2017 the year of courage.

As we grow older, courage sometimes shows up in ways that are different from how it showed up in our younger years. For example, it took courage for my friend Joy to decide to stop downhill skiing. An excellent skier, she has loved skiing. And she’s past 70 and notices her reflexes have slowed down. She felt vulnerable and less confident the last couple of times she skiied. So – does her decision not to ski shrink or expand her life? I asked Joy. Her response was interesting. She said that although she thought it would shrink it, she now feels it actually expanded it. A good friend of hers fell and broke a leg skiing last year. Recovery has been slow and painful. “I had the courage to stop before that was me,” she said. And she’s recently started cross-country skiing, which she’d never tried before. “It’s a whole new skill,” she told me. “And I’m loving learning something new.”

Maybe it’s also true that as we age, the courage we need is different – not physical daring-type courage, but emotional and relational. Think of the courage to keep learning, to acknowledge when we don’t know, to see the humanity in someone we disagree with, to forgive.

I can already think of many ways I’m hoping to have courage this year:

  • To say “yes” to opportunities, challenges, life
  • To say “no” when I don’t want to do something
  • Not to be so sure I’m right about things
  • To listen deeply to people who have different views of things
  • To take care of myself, including eating less sugar
  • To create and participate in things that are a lot of fun
  • To stretch myself – keep learning
  • To speak up in the face of prejudice and injustice
  • To speak openly of spiritual matters
  • To love people deeply and well

Anne Lamott calls me to find new depths of courage:

“If there is one door in the castle you have been told not to go through, you must.
Otherwise, you’ll just be rearranging furniture in rooms you’ve already been in.”

What would be a good theme for your 2017? My friend Donna named her year “Simplify.” Before choosing courage, I considered curiosity, generosity and love. Somehow this quote tipped me to courage: “Without courage, wisdom bears no fruit.” ―Baltasar Gracian

COACHING QUESTIONS

  1. Consider choosing a theme for 2017.
  2. What will your theme for the new year be?
  3. How might it make 2017 a better year?
  4. Have a meaningful, fulfilling New Year!

Deconstructing Stigma: Picturing the Beauty in Life

Editor’s note: Deconstructing Stigma: A Change in Thought Can Change a Life is a public awareness campaign developed by McLean Hospital to spark conversation not only about behavioral and mental health but also about the stigma that surrounds it. The campaign features compelling stories from people across the United States who have been affected by mental illness, including Alan’s story below.

McLean Hospital Guest Blogger
Alan S.

2017-01-11-1484099394-9768309-AlanS37blog.jpgDespite attempts to love and care for my mother, I never felt valued growing up. As a youth, I tried to take my own life. I wound up in a series of foster homes.

It has been a battle since I was 11 just to be here.

Generations of my family have battled mental illness. My grandfather, noted Red Sox centerfielder Jimmy Piersall, became the first sports figure to publicly declare his fight with bipolar disorder. I shared that diagnosis by the time I was 27.

There were manic episodes in my life where I could jump off a building as high as the sky and land on my feet, followed by depressive states where I was sadder than sad.

I would go on to try various medications to control my illness, but without success. In 2010, determined to break the cycle and take control of my life, I bought a gym membership and a pair of running shoes. I dropped 75 pounds. I began using a camera to capture the raw, beautiful emotions of the world as I see them.

You’ve got to find a way to like yourself. That’s a beginning. I’ve learned an active body builds a calmer mind.

Now I lead a community fitness group and have taken to social media to inspire others with positive thoughts, nutrition and fitness tips, and my zest for life.

The Lord is going to have to take me kicking and screaming now. I want to be a beacon of light and hope for others.

Trevor Noah Exposes Vladimir Putin’s Sinister Actions Towards U.S. Diplomats

The U.S. recently announced it plans to deport 35 suspected Russian spies and sanction intelligence agencies it believes were involved in computer hacking during the 2016 presidential election.

Although Vladimir Putin claims he’s not going to retaliate by kicking U.S. diplomats out of Russia, the Russian leader is doing something much crueler.

“Telling someone they have to stay in Russia,” Trevor Noah said on Tuesday night’s “Daily Show.” “That is punishment!”

America Is One Big Dysfunctional Family

We, as Americans, are one hell of a screwed-up family but, even so, we’re still a family.

Never has our dysfunction been on display more than in 2016. As a post-WWII baby who witnessed the aftermath of what we can do when we all come together, and as a coed whose university closed because of national unrest during the Vietnam war–just a couple of events during my lifetime that prove we have issues–I’ve always taken pride in my country because the individuals who make up our citizenry are, overall, a good and generous people.

We don’t always agree but, hey, we can disagree aloud and not be fearful of retribution–except somehow that changed during this election year. And, of course, we each fault the other side for it.

Our family must return to a place of talking about our issues, not making personal attacks, and denigrating one another. We are so incredibly fortunate to live in a country where we can openly speak our minds. Seriously, do we get how amazing that is? Most of the world is not so lucky, so let’s talk to each other in a constructive way!

I arrogantly thought I was immune to all the madness that went on during this year’s election cycle. I did my best to stay above the fray, as did some of my friends. I quietly dodged and weaved my way through any opposing political conversations even though I stood strong in my own convictions.

For me there was no judgment if we differed; that’s just the way it is and always has been. This time, however, there was extreme self-righteousness. It went way beyond the norm. Consequently, I held my feelings much closer than I had in the past because, if I didn’t believe the way other side did, in their minds there was obviously something wrong with me. This is a political twist that I’ve never experienced. Say what you will about the candidate, but don’t personally disparage me because of my own beliefs. For the first time in my life, I was lumped into an inflammatory category that said nothing about the real me. It was very discouraging and, inside, I railed against it.

I love my friends and didn’t want to step into the ugliness with them. Elections will, thankfully, come and go, you’ll vote for the lesser of two evils (your crass uncle, or your less-than-honest aunt), you’ll win some and lose some, but friends, they are forever. I wouldn’t allow myself to suffer the loss of a friendship over an election. That’s just not possible.

Yet it was excruciatingly challenging to resist pounding my thumbs on my iPhone keyboard every time one of my Facebook friends posted some ill-informed and hateful, personal attack on my candidate, or worse yet, on me and my so-called ilk! I used to love Facebook. And it was hard not to lose respect for a friend when their relentless venting clouded my thoughts of them, but I didn’t.

Then, a month after the election, having escaped unscathed, one of my dearest friends of over forty years, a person with whom I went to college, traveled the world, partied, and helped through divorces and deaths–a person who I love and has long known my political beliefs, called me from across the country. She left a message that sounded like something terrible was going on in her life. I returned her call and asked what was wrong. Was she ill? Did she split from her husband? No, it was neither. It was the election.

I encouraged her to move on, telling her that’s why our country is so great: we can change our leaders every four years. Sometimes you get who you want, sometimes you don’t, but it all balances out. Then she asked me who I voted for. After I told her, her tone changed. “I have to go. I can’t talk anymore.” I asked her to keep talking, but she simply hung up, and I haven’t heard from her since. The election cost me exactly what I was hoping to avoid.

People, please, let’s come together as individuals and be respectful of our differences. There will never be a perfect scenario for any of us but if we accept that we can disagree, engage in fruitful discourse, and fight our fights with dignity and empathy, we can make our country, and ultimately our lives, better. Is it possible that good things might happen during the next administration? Only time will tell. But what is possible is that we can, at least, give it a chance.

Why Sex Gets Better In Old Age

By Miri Forbes, Robert Krueger, Nicholas Eaton

Aging is generally associated with improvements in our quality of life: We become more proficient in our work, learn how to manage our finances better, and our bonds with loved ones deepen. With time and practice, most of the core domains of our lives improve as we develop skills and strategies to manage our lives with more mastery. An exception to this pattern is the quality of our sex lives, which has consistently been reported to deteriorate with age.

2016-12-16-1481921752-3363201-givingkindness.jpg

While this fits with the messages we receive from popular culture, which tell us that sex is a young person’s domain, it is somewhat at odds with the fact that older adults continue to explore and enjoy sexuality well into old age. The majority of men and women over 60 in the U.S. are sexually active, most at least two to three times per month (more often than many younger adults). They also rate sex as an important part of life.

So, if there is no epidemic of age-related frigidity, why would sexual quality of life take a nosedive in later life? A common answer to this question cites declining physical health and sexual functioning with age. Another answer might be: The quality of our sex lives doesn’t decline with age.

Studying sex and aging

There is a key element missing from nearly all studies of sex and aging: studying change over time. If we ask a group of people how satisfied they are with their sex life, and the younger people are more satisfied than the older people, does that mean that aging is responsible for this difference? What if instead the apparent age difference is because people born in the 1930s have different attitudes toward sex than people who grew up after the sexual revolution of the ’60′s and ’70′s?

To get to the bottom of how aging affects sexual quality of life, we analyzed patterns in longitudinal data collected from over 6,000 individuals followed over a period of 18 years, spanning ages 20-93. In 1995, 2004, and 2013, the representative sample of English-speaking Americans completed extensive self-administered survey questionnaires in private and returned them by mail.

A key question for our study was: How would you rate the sexual aspects of your life these days, from the worst possible situation (0) to the best possible situation (10)?

The basic trends in the data suggested that–without taking any other factors into account–sexual quality of life declines with age. But as people in the study aged, they placed more emphasis on the quality–not quantity–of sexual encounters. For example, frequency of sex became less important with age, and the amount of thought and effort invested in sex became more important.

These changing priorities were key predictors of sexual quality of life for older adults, and appeared to buffer its decline. When we matched older and younger adults on key characteristics of their sex lives–along with sociodemographic characteristics, and mental and physical health–older adults actually had better sexual quality of life.

For example, if we compared a 40-year-old man and a 50-year-old man with the same levels of perceived control over their sex life, who invest the same amount of thought and effort in their sex life, have sex with the same frequency and had the same number of sexual partners in the past year, we would expect the 50-year-old to report better sexual quality of life.

This is consistent with the improvement we see in other life domains with age, and highlights the benefits of life experience for sexuality as people learn more about their sexual preferences and their partners’ likes and dislikes. The positive relationship between sexual quality of life and aging was strongest in the context of good-quality romantic relationships, where sexual exploration and a focus on partners’ pleasure is more likely to take place.

Life experience related to a better sex life

Together these findings suggest that as we age, our sexual priorities change and we develop knowledge, skills, and preferences that protect against aging-related declines in sexual quality of life. Since wisdom is “the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment,” our study suggests that life experience is fostering sexual wisdom.

This is great news, as a satisfying sex life has been found to be important for health and well-being, regardless of age. For older adults in particular, being sexually active predicts a longer and healthier life.

We now know that age-related declines in sexual quality of life are largely related to modifiable factors, so we can target sexual skills, beliefs, and attitudes in clinical interventions. Given that our life expectancy continues to grow, this research highlights the opportunity to facilitate positive sexual experiences across the lifespan.

6 Ways Tech Can Help You Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

Making a New Year’s resolution is the easy part. But keeping that New Year’s resolution? That can be a little more tricky. In fact, it’s often said that 80 percent of all New Year’s resolutions end in failure. But wait ― there’s hope! It is 2017 after all, and there’s a good chance that when it comes to making a change for the better, there’s an app (or tool, device, or gadget…) for that.

We partnered with Sleep Number to find out how to use tech to our advantage as we roll into the new year. Below, six offbeat tech tools to keep your resolutions on track in 2017.

1. Texts To Remind, Inspire And Motivate

A little positive reinforcement can go a long way when it comes to sticking with a goal, and that’s where a text-messaging bot like Shine Text can help. Daily texts from Shine are meant to provide inspiration, confidence boosts and even personalized advice, which is why writer and speaker Maxie McCoy is a fan. “Text is a great medium for life-changing habits as we’re often overwhelmed with information, largely due to an inundation from social media, and text messages remain a sacred space,” McCoy says.

2. Tableware To Watch Your Waistline

For those who vow to make better choices when it comes to what they eat in 2017, there’s good news. Tableware that does nothing but collect and display foods and drinks are so old school. Instead, there’s now a plate that weighs and analyzes everything that’s on it; a bluetooth-enabled fork to measure meal speed; and a “smart” cup that lets you “hydrate intelligently,” according to its makers.

3. Virtual and Augmented Reality To Expand Your Mind

You’ve probably heard about virtual reality being used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or even phantom limb pain in amputees. You might also, like most of us, associate it solely with gaming. But VR technology, by no means, stops there. With your smartphone, and maybe even some earbuds and a cardboard headset, you can expand your mind in some fun, trippy, and healthy ways. Whether you aspire to make 2017 the year you start meditating or traveling the world, VR can be the tool that gets you there. VR apps provide an instantly intimate environment that can make you feel like you are transported. And sometimes that’s exactly what we all need to improve our health and wellbeing.

4. Blue-Light Blockers To Rest Easier

If “sleep better” is on your resolution list (and it probably should be since 30 percent of Americans are sleep deprived), ban blue light before bed. Studies show that light emitted from electronic devices and energy-efficient bulbs disrupt the body’s circadian rhythms and negatively affect sleep quality. If you can’t quit your evening screen habit cold turkey, you may want to try biological LED lamps and light bulbs, originally designed for astronauts. Alternately, you can cover your devices with blue-blocking filters, or install a backlight-altering app on your devices that will shift colors in your display to the warmer-end of the color spectrum.

5. Wearables To Look More Chic Than Geek

The future of fitness trackers is a fitness tracker that doesn’t, well, look like a fitness tracker. Jewelry designers and fashion houses are getting into the wearables game, so you can now dress in showstopping necklaces, designer bracelets, and lux-looking rings with semi-precious stones that would look right at home during fashion week. There are many choices available, which is why Sara Dimmick, owner of Physical Equilibrium in New York City, says to consult with fitness friends and trainers “to get recommendations on which ones might be a good fit.”

6. Apps To Do Everything, Ever

Because there is an app out there to help you do almost anything, it’s hard to find a New Year’s resolution that isn’t made a little easier with the help of technology. Autumn Calabrese is the creator of the 21 Day Fix and a celebrity trainer. “With all of the new technology, sticking to your health and fitness resolutions should be easier than ever,” says Calabrese. “Anytime you have something or someone helping keep you accountable and tracking your progress, you are more likely to stay on track.”

Just like diet and exercise, sleep is unique to each person and important for optimal health. Sleep Number® beds adjust on each side to your ideal level of firmness, comfort and support — your Sleep Number® setting. And when you add SleepIQ® technology, you’ll know what to adjust for your best possible sleep.

Donald Trump’s Path To 300 House Votes On Infrastructure Runs Through The Black Caucus

WASHINGTON ― Donald Trump opponents have been urging Democrats since the day after the election to offer the incoming president nothing but across-the-board resistance to his agenda. Anything else, the argument goes, is tantamount to an endorsement of racism, misogyny and Islamophobia.

Liberal magazine writers have been particularly outspoken in support of the strategy of all-out opposition, arguing that only complete obstruction will drive Trump’s approval numbers low enough for Democrats to capitalize, whereas bipartisan cooperation will only make him more popular. “Charles Schumer is leading Democrats to their doom,” warned New York magazine’s Jonathan Chait, slamming the incoming Senate minority leader for pledging to work with Trump on an infrastructure bill. Slate’s Jamelle Bouie warned that Democrats who collaborate “run the real risk of being co-opted, of bolstering the political prospects of ethno-nationalism in the name of a broad ‘populism’ that isn’t actually at play. An infrastructure bill doesn’t outweigh the impact of Trump’s attacks on communities of color, even if it’s influenced by the left. Communities of color need physical and economic security.”

The people who represent those communities of color, however, are much more ready to make a deal. The Huffington Post spoke with 11 of the 45 members of the Congressional Black Caucus in the House of Representatives and found the vast majority skeptical but willing to work on an infrastructure bill with Trump, even if Trump cuts House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and her lieutenant, Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), out of the process.

“The biggest mistake Obama made was trying to work directly with Boehner and Cantor. He should’ve gone straight to the Tuesday Group,” said Sam Geduldig, a lobbyist who is one of K Street’s top donors to the GOP, referring to a group of moderate House Republicans that has since dwindled. “My firm and our clients are looking at this as an opportunity to team with black lobbyists and black caucus members to put together a coalition and work with the rank and file to bypass Pelosi and Schumer. We know Trump won’t make the same mistake as Obama.”

Moses Boyd, a Democratic lobbyist and former senior Senate Democratic aide, said that he wasn’t advocating bypassing Democratic leaders but does believe the CBC could play a pivotal role if Trump approached them. “If he’s serious, then we’re serious,” said Boyd, who has worked on lobbying campaigns with Geduldig. “I believe there’s an opportunity to push critically needed infrastructure investments, particularly in the inner city.”

William Lacy Clay Jr., who represents St. Louis, perked up at the thought of Trump bypassing Democratic leadership and working directly with the CBC. “He’s got my attention, if that’s their approach. I don’t have a problem with it,” he said, adding that St. Louis, being a transportation hub at the center of the country, has a number of infrastructure needs.

“One in particular is the merchant’s bridge, which carries a lot of train traffic over the Mississippi. So if that’s their approach for 2017, I’m all in,” Rep. Clay said.

If he’s serious, then we’re serious. I believe there’s an opportunity to push critically needed infrastructure investments, particularly in the inner city.
Democratic lobbyist Moses Boyd

Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.), who represents parts of Kansas City, advised Trump not to try to cut side deals but added that the CBC’s founding motto, formulated by Lacy Clay’s father, may become relevant. “It is worth Mr. Trump knowing the motto of the Congressional Black Caucus, written several decades ago by William Clay: ‘We have no permanent enemies, no permanent friends, only permanent interests.’ But it’s not going to be easy to trust someone who has almost blatantly sent out a message of ‘I don’t care about you guys,’” Cleaver said. “To be sure, there isn’t a single person in our caucus who thinks that the president was extending an olive branch when he nominated Sen. [Jeff] Sessions, nor when he selected Mr. [Steve] Bannon.”

Bannon, who claims to have worked to establish Breitbart.com as a home for the “alt-right,” which was coined as a more palatable term for white nationalism, sees the infrastructure package as a way to cleave black and brown voters from Democrats. “I’m not a white nationalist; I’m a nationalist. I’m an economic nationalist,” Bannon, who is Trump’s chief strategist, told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m the guy pushing a trillion-dollar infrastructure plan. With negative interest rates throughout the world, it’s the greatest opportunity to rebuild everything. Shipyards, ironworks, get them all jacked up.”

“If we deliver, we’ll get 60 percent of the white vote and 40 percent of the black and Hispanic vote, and we’ll govern for 50 years,” Bannon boasted.

Cleaver said the CBC would be willing to talk. “Now, if there are things the next president wants to do that matches our agenda, then you’ll find the CBC working with the next president. For example, if he genuinely wants to do transportation, if he genuinely wants to do criminal justice reform, he’s going to find a receptive ear from the Congressional Black Caucus and Hispanic Congressional Caucus.”

Danny K. Davis, who represents Chicago, said he was skeptical Trump would go that route but that if he did, he’d be ready to talk. “Any conversation would have to include the allness of America,” he said, noting that his district includes many areas that would not typically be thought of “as part of black need.”

“Now what I would be open to is a conversation about our 10-20-30 plan that we’ve been pushing. Which means that you take 10 percent of your appropriations and put them in areas where 20 percent of the population has been living at or below the poverty level for 30 years. I’d be delighted to have that conversation,” Rep. Davis said.

Outgoing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada wasn’t bothered by the suggestion Trump break protocol and cut out leadership. “If Trump thinks he can get the infrastructure bill by going to the CBC, good. Those are all my friends. I want infrastructure. However he gets it done, he should get it done,” Reid said.

Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.), formerly the chairman of the CBC, said it “would be a mistake for any president to bypass the minority party in the Congress.”

“I’m not suggesting that he should exclude the Congressional Black Caucus,” he added. “You start your negotiations with the leaders of the Democratic Party and Democratic caucus, but certainly we want to be a part of the conversation.”

He has a list of upgrades his district needs, including “water and sewer systems that are over 100 years old. I don’t know how you define infrastructure. Some people would put schools into infrastructure, and if that is the case we have schools that need to be brought into the 21st century. We have a lot of dilapidated and boarded-up housing that is contributing to the blight in the community. These boarded-up houses need to be demolished.”

“I don’t think there’s going to be any daylight between the CBC and the Democratic caucus. “That kind of divide-and-conquer strategy is not smart for us,” said Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.).

Others were skeptical that Trump would come forward with anything useful to negotiate over ― and, indeed, Paul Krugman and others point to signs that it may just be one more grift anyway. “It would be interesting to see if he even proposes something,” said Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), saying she doubted “he would propose something that is helpful to Democrats or our core values, since I’ve not seen that with his appointments, I’ve not seen any apologies for the things that he has said that affect me personally as a female and an African-American. I get that he is the president-elect, and maybe if he acts like that and sends us something, we’ll take it from there.”

Cedric Richmond, a Louisiana Democrat, is the incoming chairman of the CBC. He said it was too early to say whether he’d say yes to direct talks with Trump. “I have not talked to him, so I have no idea, to tell you the truth. And the caucus has not seen anything or been presented with anything, or [been] contacted in any way, so it’s really just hypothetical right now. It’s not a yes. It’s not a no. You know, we’ll see what he does.”

Reading Books Makes You Smarter And Richer (And Healthier)

I love blogs.

I love them so much that I built an entire online business off of one dinky blog.

But there’s no blog in the world that can ever compare to a book. You can’t wrap a blog up and give it as a gift.

I’ve been on a particular Amazon binge recently, stocking up my shopping cart for the holidays. (Is it weird that I buy myself Christmas presents?) I’ve been getting so many heavy packages delivered to my door that it got me thinking: “Why am I choosing a book over the easy download?”

It’s the object. The artifact. The fact that what I’m holding is a physical representation of years and years of toil and synthesis.

I’ve written about it before, but reading a lot of books is prerequisite to being a great business owner, or great at anything. They’re a cheap investment with a potentially infinite ROI. A world class expert might work for 20+ years to figure something out, completely devoting her entire life to answering one particular question, which you get for the cost of lunch.

Even more thought-provoking, I realized, the physicality of the experience helps me remember.

I have a hard time remembering which books I’ve read on Kindle or iPad, let alone their content. And I can’t remember a SINGLE blog post title I’ve read. Not one.

So I started doing some digging to see if there was any evidence to support my experience of what we’ll call, physical vs digital.

Here are my findings.

1. Print Leads to Improved Comprehension and Retention

In recent years there have been tons of studies comparing the pros and cons of reading something digitally or in print.

In almost all studies the results show that “screen-based reading behavior is characterized by more time spent on browsing and scanning, keyword spotting, one-time reading, non-linear reading and reading more selectively.”

This leads to lower comprehension of the actual material read and also a decreased ability to retain the information.

Learning the price of a shirt is not something we necessarily want or need to commit to long-term memory. The content of a book, however…a little different.

In comparison studies show that “the ‘real’ experience that physical media provides means it’s better at becoming part of memory.”

And now I feel validated! This is exactly my experience. Essentially what the research shows is that if you want to understand and retain information you should pick up a book.

But it gets even better.

2. Print is Better for Your Eye Health and Sleep Cycle.

Another benefit of reading physical media instead of digital media is the effect it has on your health.

In a study out of Harvard, scientists “found the body’s natural circadian rhythms were interrupted by the short-wavelength enriched light, otherwise known as blue light, from electronic devices.”

Blue light has been proven to to suppress melatonin, which impacts your circadian clock and increases alertness when you should be winding down. Scientists note that “the use of light-emitting devices immediately before bedtime is a concern because of the extremely powerful effect that light has on the body’s natural sleep/wake pattern and how that may play a role in perpetuating sleep deficiency.”

Let’s be real. As an entrepreneur, work never really ends. As a daily practice, we need to learn how to turn “off” and reading a physical book is a great mechanism to encourage that

3. Print Provides a Sense of Progress.

Some benefits of reading print media over digital are more emotional than scientific. Think about the last time you read an important book. Do you remember an acute sense of pride as you flipped the last page of the book?

One of the clear psychological benefits of physical media is the sense of progress we feel when flipping the pages back.

When you read on paper you can sense with your fingers a pile of pages on the left growing and shrinking on the right. You have the tactile sense of progress, which just feels awesome. It’s an experience. A journey.

And it’s not just the sense of pride, a book provides a reminder of your intellectual journey, and gives you something to display in your office or home that represents your interests.

What we keep on our bookshelves and coffee tables are representations of our personalities. We talk about them, we look at them, we reference them. They help others get to know us better and are often great conversation starters.

To that end…

I was talking to my friend Nathan, the founder of Foundr Mag, recently, about how excited I am to have a physical book being published in the Spring, because I just don’t think that blog posts are all that memorable.

Nathan one-upped me and told me that Foundr was creating a book for the very same reason! They’re even running a kickstarter to fund it, in true startup fashion.

Foundr started as a digital magazine three years ago with the intent to help entrepreneurs successfully launch their startups. Over the years they’ve collected some amazing stories and tips from legendary founders.

It’s encouraging to know I’m not the only one with a successful blog who wants to memorialize the physical book!

I wonder if this will become a trend. What do you think?

FAITH

2016 just took yet another piece of our hearts when George Michael suddenly disappeared like a careless whisper which in the moment does nothing more than challenge, well, our faith. Nothing hurts more than the staggering loss of a mother or father figure.

I’m sure, if you are like me, every time a star suddenly extinguishes, you have taken an astonished, breathless step back while clutching your chest so many times this year, that at this point it feels like we have been performing a kind of global sized ritual farewell dance whose steps are becoming second nature to us…even though each time it doesn’t hurt any less.

Death, which seems no less cuddly than Simon Cowell, seems to quickly judge and even dismiss some of our greatest sons and daughters with the casual wave of a casual hand.

A partial list of the musicians who have fallen is literally too much to bear. We have lost David Bowie, Prince, Paul Kantner, George Martin, Merle Haggard, Marni Nixon, Leonard Cohen and Glen Frey. We lost Muhammad Ali, Patty Duke, Alan Rickman, Gene Wilder, Garry Shandling, Doris Roberts, Alan Thicke, Morely Safter, Peter Shaffer, Gordon Howe, Elie Wiesel, Michael Cimino, Edward Albee, Arnold Palmer, Robert Vaughn, Florence Henderson, Fidel Castro, and John Glenn too. And Good now Carrie Fisher whom I idolized.

It’s like God has taken to treating our best and brightest like the 2003 toppling of the statue of Saadam Huessein in Firdos Squard in Baghdad. It is most startling, I think, when the bigger than life suddenly have no life. It seems, in the moment, incomprehensible, no different than we lose our beloved bff dogs, closest friends or relatives.

The illusion of profound, bigger than you celebrity is the distorted belief that we think we KNOW the famous and infamous intimately. Film may be projected but we do just as much projecting as we transmit our deepest daydreams from the comfort of our silky dark room seats which allows us to imagine becoming whoever we most identify with. That is what we do, after all, in our real, everyday dreams. Everyone who populates the never ending casts of our fantasy worlds are the secret understudies for our most profound and usuall unmanageable feelings. Appearing in the role of anger, may be your mom your boss or even yourself. In the role of love can be your first, your last or the one you never knew.

Celebrities are vessels and not real people to us. We imagine their lives. Their thoughts, their needs, their desires. We fixate on them. Consider them. Wish that they were our best friends.

I meet a lot of famous people in my line of TV, film and play writing. I remember when I went to Barbra Streisand’s house to pitch a film idea. When she entered the room like a blonde and blue eyed, sensual, cashmere wrapped whirlwind, the thing that struck and shocked me immediately was that she was a complete stranger (which I told her. And PS: I really liked the person I met).

We feel possessive of some famous people while others anger and offend us for reasons that have nothing whatsoever to do with them. We just HATE them. Whoever they are. My dad despised Claudette Colbert and I hear she was just swell in real life.

Over the last twenty years or so we have been instructed to live in the powerful state of now and personally I find the now so pliable and ever changing that I question what the now really is.

For me, the now is wherever my deep conscience guide (who most often sounds like a good imitation of my long ago lost dad or mom) tells me where I must commute to.

I think this is the soul’s real intent and purpose: to help us cope with the here and now of the physical world.

The best example of this is how we, who know better, have been forced to take on the sudden emergence of Donald Trump.

Real people like Bernie or Hillary were doomed from the beginning.

Millions of lost souls, long invisible to the rest of us, chose the Christian eschatology of rapture as the solution to all that filled them with emptiness and despair.

Big feelings require a bigger than life, Jesus-like second coming and just like the actual Gods who twe privately recite our nightly prayers to (who I suspect may also be our evaporated parents who we long for) so I don’t think that the actual person played any part whatsoever in this past election.

It did not matter what he said or how he endlessly contradicted himself. All that mattered was that he was the bullhorn of the bully pulpit in the Church of Now who found a simple language that could be easily devoured, like a Whitman’s Sampler, by his mostly ignorant congregation who believed in the simple and wildly untrue lie that reality shows and the people who overppoulate them were real. I worked on one and trust me, none of it is real. That is why scenes are manipuated and even reshot when the producers don’t get the reactions that they need. Reality is what TV manufacturers and simulates. Real life is what is outside your window and how much time do you spend watching that?

Reality is negotiable and Trump, who is now the Precidential (sp) Pied Piper of the Impoverished, figured that out totally by mistake. He has spent his entire life searching for a way to become omnipotent (while privately battling a life long recurrence of psychological impotence) and what better endgame part is there for him, than False God? The sad truth is, he’d really Almighty Mouse.

He was trained not at Wharton, but by living the life of an indugled,, spoiled brat trust fund baby, who “succeeeded” despite a stunning lack of talent by overcompensating for his ongoing and outsized failures. This is why he uses words like “bigly,” “huge” and “fantastic.” Because he believes to his core that those words are the magical prescription for everything. He is nothing more than clumsy, poorly trained magician at a children’s balloon party. But while you can see right through him, most four years cannot.

Welcome to the United States of Daycare.

Here, we come full circle and return to paragraph one and the loss of our most beloved fantasy real life people.

Perhaps, God, in all his infinite wisdom, while not busy helping fabulously wealthy NFL/NBA/MLB stars win championships or recording artists win Grammies, he magically turns our most beloved and needed celebrities into exclamation points, which is like a final burst explosion of fireworks which will go off inside our hearts whenever we remember them, hear their music or lyrics or watch their celluloid enshrined performances.

Because memory is the one temple that can never be destroyed.

So my advice to you all, my beloved hope searching readers, is to embrace the now that you need for now.

Include every single moment of the past, with its lessons of love and loss while you fantasize about the future and encourage the voices who talk to you like wizened duet partners, during films and plays, impulsively on the first note of a cherished song.

The most powerful legacy of the most poweful is not always apparent in the now of now.

Sometimes you have to listen to doves cry.

What I Would Have Said To My Friend Who Died By Suicide

Written by Laura Smith

September was Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. I must admit, I never thought too much about needing a month for prevention before. I realize now this thought process selfishly was because suicide wasn’t something that personally affected me. That was, until January 18, 2016.

My good friend of 21 years died by suicide. I hope you noticed I didn’t say “committed suicide.” The Sarah I knew would never have “committed suicide,” left behind her two young sons and a life full of promise and opportunity. Saying she “committed” suicide is like saying you intentionally went into a diabetic shock from lack of insulin. It’s taboo to say your brain, another organ in your body which is susceptible to disease or illness, is sick.

That’s what I want to change. I said “died by suicide” because my friend had a mental illness.  No one seems to care if you have a mental illness in this country. They call you names like “crazy” or “addict,” and they never look beyond that. My friend was the “victim” of a suicide. Maybe that explains it better. She was a victim of a mind that turned against her. She was a victim of a system that couldn’t help her.

I hope you noticed I didn’t say ‘committed suicide.’ I said ‘died by suicide’ because my friend had a mental illness.

Sarah was absolutely brilliant, even when I had met her at the young age of 14. Standing tall and proud at 6’3,” she was an unmistakable presence. Her outer shell was witty and tough, but her inner shell was vulnerable and insecure. I remember her battling depression when we were teenagers. In our 20s, she managed (under the care of a therapist) to go off medication and was using meditation and yoga to help manage her symptoms.

When she had her first child at 26, I remember having a conversation with her about postpartum depression and how we would have a plan if I thought I started to see it. She was thoughtful, agreeable and logical. The birth of her beloved child came and went without incident. Depression never reared it’s ugly head. In fact, the time during her first son’s young years was some of her best. Park outings, fishing trips, splash parks, Sarah did them all with her young son as any mother would have.

Our friendship saw a renewed uptick during this time as well. I had my first child a couple years later, and we once again bonded as juggling the life of being mothers along with our life as working, professional women. I think we both forgot about depression. That’s a lie.  I’m sure it was just me who forgot about depression. Either way, it seemed that cloud of darkness had left, and it lulled me into complacency.

About five years after her first child, her second child was born. She was giddy and happy about her new baby. I never suspected postpartum depression until it happened. Unfortunately, by then there was no plan as we had with her first child, and she was simultaneously going through a separation from the kids’ dad. She became estranged, and I was unable to reach her.

One incident a year before she died landed me at her house with others, convincing her she needed to go to the hospital to “rest.” We knew if we said for mental health reasons, she never would have gone. I was able to be available for a part of this. Yet, I wasn’t next of kin, and, thereby, unable to be her advocate. HIPAA privacy rules are strict and deep. I understand their purpose, but honestly I truly believe they are hurting more people with mental health issues than helping. That’s an entirely different post though.

I didn’t realize suicide was an end result, even after knowing she had battled depression since she was a young teen.

Instead, my smart and savvy friend was able to talk herself right out of the hospital and informed us all she only had a dx (or diagnosis) of “exhaustion” and needed more sleep. My heart sunk. Sarah knew she had depression, but now she wasn’t even admitting that. She was sick, and I was powerless to stop it.

One year almost to the month after that hospitalization, my friend was dead. Estranged after that hospital incident, I had only spoken to her through Facebook comments and likes for the last year. Had she reached out, even a little, I would have ran to her side. I really would have. She never called, messaged or even texted me though.

I’m mad at myself for becoming complacent. I’m mad I didn’t realize suicide was an end result, even after knowing she had battled depression since she was a young teen. Had she texted, I would have told her one small phrase that is now the name of a non-profit started by a mutual high school friend of ours. If you haven’t heard of it, check it out. She’s on the internet and on Facebook.

At any rate, I would have said, “You matter. You matter to me and I know things suck right now, but they will get better. Let me help you. I will help you. You don’t need to live this way.”

You matter.

You matter.

You matter.

I love you, Sarah.

Progressives Should Stop Fueling the Anti-Russia Frenzy

This week began with a mass email from the head of the Democratic National Committee, who declared: “By now, Americans know beyond any reasonable doubt that the Russian government orchestrated a series of cyberattacks on political campaigns and organizations over the past two years and used stolen information to influence the presidential campaign and congressional races.” DNC chair Donna Brazile went on: “The integrity of our elections is too important for Congress to refuse to take these attacks seriously.”

The importance of election integrity had eluded Brazile when she was a regular on CNN, posing as neutral in the Clinton-Sanders battle. “Brazile is not apologizing for leaking CNN debate questions and topics to the Hillary Clinton campaign during the Democratic primary,” the Washington Post reported last month. “Her only regret, it seems, is that she got caught.”

Many big factors affect any presidential race, and the Russian government may have tried to be one of them for the 2016 election — though it’s hardly the slam dunk that agencies like the CIA and U.S. mass media are now claiming. But in any event, this month it has become routine for a lot of progressive organizations and individuals to descend into a dangerous mode of partisan flackery.

Less than two weeks ago — as soon as unnamed CIA sources told journalists that the Kremlin was behind hacks of DNC and Clinton campaign emails — a wide range of progressive online groups, activists and commentators reflexively embraced the dominant media spin. High profile among them was MoveOn, which used its big digital footprint to spur the frenzy.

MoveOn matter-of-factly decried the “chilling news” of “Russia’s election tampering.” And, without a hint of media literacy, the group also informed its readers that “news broke that the Russian president himself was involved in the efforts to influence our November election — in favor of Donald Trump.”

Such eagerness to share undocumented spin as absolute fact has led many progressive groups to go with knee-jerk reactions. Bent on gaining a propaganda advantage over Trump, those reactions are helping to stampede this country toward a modern form of McCarthyism — as well as brinkmanship with Russia that could lead to a cataclysmic military conflict.

Zeal to blame Russia for a bad election outcome has spread like contagion among countless self-described progressives, understandably appalled by the imminent Trump presidency. But those who think they’re riding a helpful tiger could find themselves devoured later on.

If civil liberties instead of repression and diplomacy instead of war are progressive values, then all too many progressives — eager to tar Trump as a Kremlin product — have been undermining those values.

Already, from witch-hunt legislation in Congress to pernicious media blacklisting, the anti-Russia hysteria — being fueled by the high octane election-intervention storyline — has gained enormous momentum.

Days ago, assessing the momentum of that hysteria, Russian studies scholar Stephen F. Cohen cited some of the key motives propelling it (the first of which touted extremely farfetched hopes):

* “One is to reverse the Electoral College vote.”

* “Another is to exonerate the Clinton campaign from its electoral defeat by blaming that instead on Putin and thereby maintaining the Clinton wing’s grip on the Democratic Party.”

Thus, countless Bernie supporters have been unwittingly strengthening the Clinton wing of the party while beating on the anti-Putin drum.

* “Yet another is to delegitimate Trump even before he is inaugurated. And certainly no less important, to prevent the détente with Russia that Trump seems to seek.”

Of all the good reasons to “delegitimate” Trump, alleged Kremlin intervention in the election should rank quite low. Trump’s evils are huge, with a very incomplete list including vast greed, pathological lying, contempt for facts, enthusiasm for oligarchy, bigotry, environmental destruction, racism, misogyny, economic injustice, voter suppression and rampant conflicts of interest.

While echoing the anti-Russia themes belted out by Democratic Party officials and loyalists, the chorus on the left may think it’s merely grabbing the low-hanging political fruit of this historical moment. But the fruit is already turning rancid, and apt to become poisonous. It won’t be the first time in recent decades when liberals and others thought they were being clever and politically adroit as they aided and abetted the suppression of principles found in the First, Fourth and Fifth Amendments, while helping to gear up the machinery of war.

This month, by following the line of the Democratic Party leadership, groups like MoveOn actually have helped to set the stage for pressurizing Trump to deter him from pursuing policies that may be (along with opposition to trade deals such as the TPP) the only ways in which he might be appreciably better than Hillary Clinton would have been as president.

Let’s face it: Some of the fierceness of media attacks on Trump, such as from de facto neoconservative liberal-tinged entities like the Washington Post, is propelled by rage that his stance toward Russia lacks the neocon qualities that a Hillary Clinton presidency offered.

To be crystal clear: The election of Donald Trump as president is a horrific disaster, and his regime must be resisted on a vast array of issues with eternal vigilance. And, meanwhile, Vladimir Putin is a repressive ruler.

At the same time, it’s a rather glaring omission in the current outraged discourse that the U.S. government, from Egypt and Saudi Arabia to Central Asian nations and beyond, continues to avidly support regimes far worse than Russia’s. As for intervening in foreign elections, the CIA has excelled at that anti-democratic game for many decades — and mainline U.S. media outlets have been inclined to nod or even cheer when the American government and allied U.S. operatives succeed in working their will on electorates overseas.

Oh, and must we forget that U.S. efforts to determine the government leaders of other countries have sometimes gone far beyond techniques like hacking and disseminating emails? As Janine Jackson of the media watchdog group FAIR wrote, “in back of it all, what makes the umbrage of elite media so hard to stomach is the hypocrisy. This is, after all, the same elite media that supports outsider-induced ‘regime change’ anywhere and everywhere they see an official enemy, from Iraq to Honduras to Libya to Syria… You can make ‘one law for me, another for thee’ your credo, but you can’t be too surprised when others are unimpressed.”

And Jackson added: “Whatever story there is to be told about Russia and the 2016 election, corporate media have squandered the credibility it would take to tell it.”

Now, a crucial choice is right in front of the progressive groups and commentators who’ve been echoing the anti-Russia barrage from U.S. mass media. Staying on course will help to undermine civil liberties at home and will help to escalate conflicts with Russia that could end with nuclear war. Doesn’t sound “progressive” to me.

An Invitation to Outgrow Your Limitations

Have you ever noticed how the more negative you get, the more difficult everything about your life becomes, including being able to do the simplest things? It’s like suddenly sinking into dark molasses, where not only can’t you move, but everything you don’t want seems stuck to you!

To the spiritually uninitiated, it feels as if you’ve been dropped into a river of resistance but, in truth, you are being pulled into it by a lower level of self that wants you to look at whatever challenges you in life as an adversary. Its attempt at deception – to negatively alter your perception – is the only power it has to keep you from seeing unwanted moments as they are in reality: an invitation from the Divine to outgrow your present limitations. Regardless the nature of the trial set before you, it asks: “Would you like to live in a larger world, one without fear? Do you want to be less worried, or angry, and more at peace with yourself?”

We may not yet be able to hear these “questions,” or discern for ourselves the perfect timing of their compassionate appearance, but they are always present at the “point of impact” – whenever some event reveals an unseen limitation of ours. We may be given to see, for instance, how our impatience with someone we love trumps our wish to be more understanding of him or her; or perhaps we see that anger still gets the best of us when pressed into some stressful situation. You fill in the condition, but here’s the point: no unwanted condition, or its outcome can change until we outgrow the nature responsible for it.

This realization empowers you to do something with unwanted moments that had been impossible before. Now, instead of hoping that you don’t encounter moments where you feel suddenly inadequate, limited in some way, you meet every moment awake, aware, watchful – waiting for those instances where you get a chance to see the boundary line between who you have been, and are yet to be. All seemingly impassable moments in your life are seen for what they are: a pre-destined place for you to meet, let go, and outgrow that lower level of yourself that used to stand fearfully before it. The boundary between limitation and limitless disappears, and now you stand on the side of unlimited possibility.

Freedom is not found by fighting with what you think stands in your way; your true spiritual liberation rests within this one unthinkable realization: what is in your way is part of the way. Once it’s understood that whatever seems to be set against you…has actually been put there for you to outgrow it, then you have received, opened, and accepted the invitation of the Divine. The rest is done for you.

Key Lesson: In many ways, the true blessings of life often come disguised as the worst moments…but those who will be patient enough to live in the presence of what seems to be a loss or painful limitation of some kind, will soon see that temporary mask fall away, and see before them an impossibly kind and just face.

10 Minute High Intensity Holiday Workout

Tis the season to be lazy fa la la la la la la…While I wish I was just kidding in opening up the post this way, it is unfortunately the tune that people tend to sing this season. The cold, short days decrease the body’s production of many hormones associated with elevated mood, elevated energy and metabolism, and motivation to get to the gym and eat healthy. Therefore, have a plan and stick to the plan. Fight those holiday lazy low energy moods by getting to the gym rain or shine!

Here are some tools to take with you right now:

1) Choose a ten-minute workout routine and perhaps do two rounds of ten minutes through different parts of the day if you can’t commit to one big block of time. There is plenty of evidence that a 10 minute HIIT workout is very effective and promotes the same physiological response as it would for a longer workout. So short bursts are better than none. See the program below.
2) Stay well hydrated With all the germs going around, along with the desire to “fill” up from the cold, drinking warm water with lemon or plain water in general, will aid the body to feeling satiated and alert. Because people tend to comfort eat in the cold weather, this strategy will certainly help decrease false hunger pangs. According to Hollywood Physical Therapist and owner of Back2Health PT, Slava Shut, “Drinking enough water throughout the day during this time will help with thermoregulation and keeping the body’s temperature balanced. Water also helps keep the skin and cells hydrated and can help combat viruses and bacterium during the heavy flu season.”
3) Form a buddy system Don’t wait until the New Year. Call on a friend or family member and together you can:
a. Keep a food log (consider using an app for your phone)
b. See who can walk the most miles in a week using a pedometer. About 2,000 steps equals one mile. Remember that movement is just as important as working out.
c. Share moments of truth with each other, or highlights from your day to help keep your mind positive.
d. Keep a donation jar handy in each household; if any of you consume an unhealthy food item, you toss in a quarter. The person with the most quarters in the jar has to treat the other person to dinner at the end of the month.
Make it a fun month of self evolution and re-centering for the decisions you make about your life are completely within reach.

As promised, below is a 10-minute-high-intensity blast. The high intensity part includes the jumping rope. Get clearance from your doctor before jumping rope. If you cannot jump rope, simply step side to side, do jumping jacks or power walk for 1 minute intervals. For the exercises, you will do a set of 10 reps of one exercise in between the cardio. If for whatever reason you cannot do one of these exercises, simply repeat an exercise you can do. The goal is to move for 10 straight minutes with 10-20 seconds recoveries in between each exercise and round of jumping rope.

Ready? Let’s go.

Warmup (3-5 minutes): March in place, Jumping Jacks, Dynamic Flexibility, power walk, gentle dancing

Jump Rope: 250-500 reps total (jump 50-100 reps in a set)

Starting in plank position with your hands a bit wider than your shoulders, and remain on the ball mounts of your feet. Slightly tilt your pelvis back so that your hips square out to the ground. Keep your abdomen engaged. As you lower to the ground, keep your hips in the same plane as your chest. Avoid dipping the hips first. Keep your neck in alignment with your upper back. Exhale the breath to come back up. For video demonstration click HERE.

Jump Rope: do 50-100 reps

Side Plank with Foot Taps:

Starting in a side plank with your shoulder directly over your wrist and on the knife edge of your bottom foot, stabilize. Keep your spine neutral, along with your neck. Energy the bottom hand as to pull the shoulder down away from the ear. Activate the lats. Then, slowly elevate the top leg to go forward and back. You always have the option of dropping the lower leg for more balance. For video demonstration click HERE.

Jump Rope: do 50-100 reps

Utkatasana Legs (Chair Pose) with Shoulder Extension and Shoulder Flexion

This is one of my favorite yoga moves. You can make it more challenging by using light dumbbells. The weight of your arms may be just enough. Make sure the legs are strong and isometrically held. You want the knees to touch, however if you have weak or tight hips, it might be more comfortable to have your feet hip distanced apart. When you go into shoulder flexion (arms over head) relax your shoulders and avoid arching your lower back. When you go into shoulder extension (arms back) point your palms to the ground and get the shoulder blades to squeeze in and down. For video demonstration click HERE.

Jump Rope: do 50-100 reps

Reverse Lunges:

Starting with one foot forward and one foot back, be sure to stabilize through both feet, keeping your hips neutral and your tailbone slightly tucked. Align your spine with your ears to track over your shoulders. Using your arms, drive your back leg forward and bring your knee up in alignment with your hip. Avoid tilting your hip up with the knee up. Then slowly step the foot back and watch both hips remain parallel to the ground. Repeat. Keep your entire body aligned through this dynamic movement. Take your time and find a tempo that works. For video demonstration click HERE.

Jump Rope: do 50-100 reps

Plank With Chest and Ankle Taps:

Starting in plank position on your hands and ball of the feet, draw your shoulders down as if the floor was slippery and your hands and feet are gripping the floor for stability. Activate the core muscles and breathe. Once you feel like your muscles are all engaged, tap your chest with your right hand, then your left. Then reach back to down dog and tap your left ankle with your right hand, and then your right ankle with your left hand. In between the ankle taps, return to a plank. Take your time with these and get the deep stretch while you work the muscles of the core. For video demonstration click HERE.

North Carolina Governor Bashes Schools That Stand Up For Transgendered Students

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory continues to defend the state’s sweeping anti-LGBT law despite public outrage and political backlash, going as far as to mock Bruce Springsteen after the musician canceled a concert in protest,

When a school system in Charlotte on Monday announced its new bathroom policy that flies in the face of the controversial law by allowing students to identify as whatever gender they choose, the governor’s office couldn’t help but fire back.

A spokesman for McCrory, in a statement on Tuesday, accused Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools of defying transparency and “purposely breaking state law.”

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, a district that includes more than 146,000 K-12 students in 168 schools, on Monday adopted an updated policy that it says follows a federal court ruling and will better protect transgendered students, The Charlotte Observer reports. In addition to allowing students to select the gender and name by which they want to identify, the policy requires that schools honor that identity in restrooms, locker rooms, yearbooks and graduation ceremonies.

“This is about courage, understanding and compassion,” Superintendent Ann Clark told the newspaper. “These are our children. These are the community’s children.”

Passed in March, North Carolina’s controversial House Bill 2 removes legal anti-discrimination protection for LGBTQ people and mandates that individuals use the public bathrooms that corresponds to the sex they were assigned at birth. It faces a legal challenge from the U.S. Department of Justice.

George Battle III, an attorney for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, said during a news conference that the updated policy is not meant to defy House Bill 2, according to The Charlotte Observer. Instead, it follows an April ruling by the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals which Battle said requires “transgendered students must be given access to the restroom, locker room, changing room facilities of the gender for which they self-identify.”

“That’s the law of the land for five states that are in the 4th Circuit, North Carolina being one of those states,” Battle said. “This isn’t CMS making a stand against HB2.”

Predictably, McCrory saw things differently.

“Instead of providing reasonable accommodations for some students facing unique circumstances,” the school district “made a radical change to their shower, locker room and restroom policy for all students,” Graham Wilson, the governor’s press secretary, said.

“This curiously-timed announcement that changes the basic expectations of privacy for students comes just after school let out and defies transparency, especially for parents,” Wilson said in a statement. “The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System should have waited for the courts to make a decision instead of purposely breaking state law.”

The school district’s new policy is slated to take effect when classes resume in August.

You have to accept them for what they are,” Kelly Hagemann, a school district parent, told WSOC-TV. “We’re maybe not going to understand everything about it, but we can’t really alienate people.”

Late last month, University of North Carolina System President Margaret Spellings wrote she had “no intent” to enforce the anti-trans bathroom law.

How To Avoid Making The Great American Social Mistake

This post was originally published on Techealthiest.

“What do you do for a living?”

Ahhh, the go-to question for most American men in a new social situations, usually with male strangers.

Living equals working when make strangers talk for the first time.

American “man code” deems it acceptable to learn of a stranger’s occupation before anything else. (I can’t speak for women in this scenario, but feel free to comment below if it resonates with you as well.)

Of course, you have the option of hiding behind your phone and checking his or her Linkedin profile to see if his job is even worth talking about. This strategy works well if you fear the conversational unknown.

In a professional setting it makes sense to talk about work, but why can’t we put work away when we have the chance to talk about other things?

I can think of five “good” reasons why we would begin an ambiguous social situation by asking “What do you do?”:

1) In the Age of the Short Attention Span, it makes sense to get immediate feedback on whether this person is worth your time investment. Also, with all of our messaging, video conferencing, emailing, Tweeting, and Facebooking, we’re gradually forgetting how to relate to people in the flesh.

2) You ask about his so you can talk about yours. Talking about your occupation would be intensely satisfying if you’re proud of a recent work victory or a change in your professional identity.

3) You have no idea what to talk about other than what you do for a living. You have few hobbies or interests. Life is work for you.

4) You’ve been conditioned to ask this question. The thought of discussing your private life with a relative stranger is anxiety-provoking.

5) You suffer from social anxiety, which limits your mental freedom to talk about risky and personal topics.

A conversation with an unfamiliar person can be steered in many directions, yet it’s as though there’s some strange, magnetic, American pull toward the topic of work as quickly as possible.

Yes, it’s absolutely normal to feel nervous and uncomfortable when you’re expected to create conversation with someone new for more than a few moments. Discussing work makes total sense since we all expect it, but does that make it a good choice?

Americans pay a heavy price for requiring passage through unnecessary and meaningless social niceties in order to get to the good stuff.

Unless you’re passionate about your job and you’ve established some semblance of a “work-life balance” (an unattainable, silly ideal for most of us), it’s not so healthy to avoid sharing more about yourself with someone new.

This habit is usually a sign that you haven’t properly invested in finding and carrying out your passions.

If you’re passionate about non-work activities, you’ll want to talk about them. If you lack passions in your life, then work is a safe topic.

Take a moment to consider how much you tend to discuss work in ambiguous social situations. If you are a what-do-you-do-for-work kind of person, then it’s a sign you need to invest more time in things that make you happy.

Many of us struggle with social anxiety. We enter a room filled with unfamiliar people and our thoughts begin to race. We wonder how we’re being judged by others. We have very specific fears about the worst judgments someone can make.

Social anxiety seems to be an even larger issue among younger generations who’ve been raised on screens and who prefer texting over face-to-face communication.

Here’s a quick conversational tip for people who grapple with social anxiety:

Enter an ambiguous social situation prepared with in-depth knowledge of one or two topics you feel comfortable talking about. Reading the New York Times, Time Magazine or some other news source that explores issues on a deeper level. This way you can always steer the conversation toward one of your comfortable topics if you’re super nervous. Ideally, you will choose topics you’re passionate about.

It’s much easier to talk about our passions. Challenge yourself to avoid discussing your job. This will help you to value your passions more. Try to get at what your conversation partner is passionate about. Avoid asking about his or her job.

If the person you just met keeps talking about his or her job, allow him or her to talk about work for a bit and then try to steer the conversation toward what you’re both passionate about in life. Let him or her speak as much as you do.

I promise you you’ll get more out of the conversation.

Why do I consider this social behavior to be an American issue?

Americans seem to work more than people from most other countries. It’s how we spend most of our time, so we define ourselves by what we do for a living.

In order to maintain our consumer-driven culture, we have to work long hours to afford stuffing our lives with material goods.

On the silver anniversary of ADVICE, allow me to say thank you to everyone for reading and to those who have shared their personal lives in this public forum.

After all, this column wouldn’t exist without your questions, so please keep them coming.

(Questions have been modified for space and clarity.)

I went on a date with a guy and had a really good time. At the end of the night, he told me he was married. He said he felt bad and wanted to be honest with me. Yes, I was very upset, as I seem to attract married men. We still talk to each other on the phone and we do see each other two to three times a week at our sons’ baseball practices. I have told him several times that we cannot continue talking to each other, and he tells me his relationship with his wife is OK. He continues to contact me and tells me he wants me, but I don’t know if he really likes me. I know he can’t just break it off with his wife overnight — nor would he — but can he really feel something for me?

In one of the first editions of this column, I explained how, in my answers, I wouldn’t be telling people what they should or shouldn’t be doing. Doing so would imply that I know best, and that’s not the case. I’m neither judge nor jury.

Instead, my goal is to paint a 360-degree picture of a situation, to present all viable options and resolutions — and then let the questioner decide on the proper course of action.

Unfortunately, with this question, I’m having trouble adhering to my mission statement.

This situation is bad all the way around. He’s married. Your sons play baseball together. I’m not sure there are two sides to this story.

I don’t mean to sound harsh or insensitive, but I don’t see how this is a relationship you can pursue. I get that it’s difficult to be lonely, and I get that when you find someone you like, you’re willing to do just about anything — and put up with just about anything — to hold onto that connection.

But do you really want to have an affair with the father of your son’s teammate? Before you wade too far into this, think about the potential consequences. Think about if this is what you want for your love story. Think about your son and the humiliation he stands to suffer if things go south. (And in all likelihood, it will go south.) Think about this guy’s wife and what it’d feel like to have someone cheat on you. Do you really want to be the other woman?

Not that it makes a difference, but this guy isn’t even saying he’s looking to leave his wife for you. In fact, he’s telling you the exact opposite. He’s telling you that his marriage is fine and that he’s not going anywhere.

Best-case scenario, he’s someone who should never have gotten married and is searching for his next side piece. Worst-case scenario, he’s a scumbag who takes advantage of unsuspecting women to get off, preying on their vulnerabilities in the bleachers during batting practice. Where’s the upside? Where’s the fairy-tale ending? Where’s the ending that results in anything but disaster?

Could he be feeling something for you? Sure. I guess. But I think the more appropriate question is: What does it matter?

Instead of focusing on him, let’s focus on you. You said you always attract married men — the very definition of the unavailable dream. Why do you think that is? Granted, given your son’s age and extracurricular activities, these are the guys you most frequently come across, so it could be a product of circumstance.

But if I had to bet, I’d say there’s more to it than that. I don’t believe you’re consciously pursuing other people’s husbands, but I do believe they keep showing up on your doorstep for a reason.

While I accept that there’s much in life we can’t control, I do think that the worlds we create for ourselves aren’t created by accident. They are often a reflection of our inner thoughts and beliefs. To a certain extent, our lives play out as a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So I’m wondering what’s making you invest in this toxic relationship. What purpose or void is it filling? Do you not believe you’re worthy of something better? Do you not believe you’re worthy of happiness? Deep down, is there something that’s convinced you that this is the best that you deserve?

I don’t know, and I’m not going to guess. In realigning with my mission statement for this column, I’ll let you be the one to decide.

Lots Of Parents Are Naming Babies After Clinton, Trump… And ‘Hamilton”

It seems that this year’s presidential election is influencing parents in ways beyond political activism and baby fashion choices. Presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are apparently providing baby name inspiration as well.

BabyCenter analyzed the roughly 115,000 baby names registered on the site and found that the name Hillary increased 142 percent in popularity since this time last year. The names Bill, Chelsea and Charlotte rose 113 percent, 18 percent and 17 percent respectively.

According to a press release from BabyCenter, the name Donald also rose in popularity but only by eight percent. Melania is up 36 percent, and Ivanka increased by four percent.

Bernie Sanders does not appear to have had the same effect, as the name Bernard fell 50 percent, and no new baby Bernies appeared in the BabyCenter database.

“A presidential election is a big deal, and new parents who choose names like Hillary and Donald are placing a bet that their new baby will share the name of the next American president,” Linda Murray, BabyCenter Global Editor in Chief, stated in the press release.

“In a sense, they’re already voting for their favorite candidate. Time will tell whether they picked a winner or the next John Kerry or Mitt Romney,” she added.

BabyCenter’s analysis also found some potential baby name influence in the hit Broadway musical, “Hamilton.” Since last June, the name Hamilton has increased almost 60 percent in popularity. Meanwhile Jefferson is up 171 percent, James rose 25 percent, George increased by 21 percent and Maria is up almost 22 percent.

“The combination of ‘Hamilton’s’ success and the election year has parents feeling patriotic,” Murray explained, adding, “When parents reach into history to select a leader’s name for their child, it’s usually because they feel inspired by that person’s values and legacy. The Broadway show’s multi-ethnic, cross-culture story speaks to millennial parents. Hamilton is the new Lincoln or Madison.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.
